Here is a game-by-game summary of the event. Compton Magic, which hosted the event, had two teams as well as a San Diego Magic team. Other teams are referred to by the names of several local colleges, though that was just for the purpose of identifying the teams (and it’s more interesting that saying “Team A” and “Team B”) and the teams have no connection to the colleges of that name.
11 am: Long Beach State 92, Fullerton 85
Eules Thompson (LA Southwest) had 29 points and 6 assists to lead Long Beach State to the win.
Fullerton led early in the game, but by halftime Long Beach had come back and led, 48-39, at the break. The game was close throughout the second half, and was tied at 85 before Long Beach State scored the final 7 points of the game.
Other standouts for Long Beach State included Brandon Glenn (Arkansas Tech transfer), who had 21 points and 9 rebounds, and Ronnie Frazier (Oxnard) and Chris Walton (West LA), who had 12 and 11 points, respectively.
For Fullerton, Jerard Moret (West LA) led the way with 17 points and 4 assists. Joseph Bonner (Mt. SAC) had 13 points and 7 rebounds. Royce Mitchell (Natomas HS) had 12 points and 4 steals. Cerritos teammates Aaron Thompson and Lawrence Robinson also scored in double figures; Thompson had 11 points while Robinson had 10 points and 4 assists.
12 noon: Compton Magic Blue 80, San Diego State 53
Four Magic players scored in double figures as the Blue squad had no trouble with San Diego State, claiming an 80-53 win.
Jonathan Malloy (Oxnard) and Josh Guillory (Marshalltown) each had 15 points to lead the way for the Blue; Malloy also had 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks and a steal while Guillory also had 6 rebounds and 2 assists. Jamel McGuire (SD City) chipped in with 14 points while John Johnson (Oxnard) had 13 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists for the winners.
Arnie Hollis (West LA) led the way for SD State with 23 points. Brian Santiago (Cuesta) had a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Charles Garcia (Riverside) narrowly missed a double-double with 9 points and 9 rebounds.
1 pm: Compton Magic 96, Stanford 60
Chris Smith (LA Southwest), the second-leading scorer in California last season, continued that pace with 23 points on 10-of-14 shooting to lead the Magic to the easy win.
Smith’s 23 points were easily game-high, and he also had 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. But five other Magic players also scored in double figures. Donte Smith (Pasadena) had 15 points and a game-high 9 assists, and Travon Harmon (Pasadena) had 15 points on 5 threes. Zach Atkinson (Feather River) had 10 points, 6 rebounds and 4 blocks. J.R. Reese (Riverside) had 10 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists. And Ervin Dunson (SD City) had 10 points plus an amazing total of 18 rebounds.
For Stanford, Mychal Thomas (E. Wyoming) led the way with 15 points and 7 rebounds. Brandon McCain (Fullerton) and David Renfroe (Chaffey) had 8 points each; Renfroe also pulled down a team-high 8 rebounds.
2 pm: USC 93, San Diego Magic 67
Buchi Awaji (Citrus) had a tremendous game with 37 points (6 threes), 12 rebounds and 5 assists to lead USC to a surprisingly easy win over the San Diego Magic team.
Awaji’s Citrus teammate Troy Payne also had a big game, posting a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Moses Omolade (Southwestern) also had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. And Will Smith (Southwestern) had a solid all-around game with 10 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists.
For San Diego, Marvin Bettus (Southwestern) led the way with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Dominic Stafford (CS Stanislaus transfer) had 11 points. David Kinder (SD City) had 6 points and tied Bettus for team honors with 10 rebounds.
3 pm: Compton Magic Blue 99, Fullerton 96
In the first of three consecutive games that went to the wire with the outcome in doubt, each team had 6 players score in double figures in a wide-open game that ended with the Magic claiming a 3-point victory.
For Compton, Josh Guillory (Marshalltown) led the way with 20 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 blocks and 3 steals. But he had plenty of support. Jonathan Malloy (Oxnard) had 17 points and a game-high 8 assists while Brandon Hames (Centennial HS) had 17 points and 5 assists. Genesis Maciel (Centennial HS) had 13 points while Chris Brown (Long Beach) and Jamel McGuire (SD City) each had 12.
For Fullerton, Royce Mitchell (Natomas HS) had 20 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Jerard Moret (West LA) had a double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds, while Joseph Bonner (Mt. SAC) just missed a double-double with 16 points and 8 rebounds. Tim Island (Long Beach State transfer) had 12 points. Marquis Robinson (Natomas HS) had 11 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists while Cervante Burrell (Sacramento HS) had 10 points, 5 rebounds and a team-high 8 assists.
4 pm: Compton Magic 83, Long Beach State 82
Donte Smith (Pasadena) scored on a fallaway jumper from the baseline with 4 seconds left to lift the Magic to a 1-point victory over Long Beach State in the closest game of the day.
Smith’s shot capped a frantic final 75 seconds, coming after Brandon Glenn (Arkansas Tech transfer) had put Long Beach State in the lead with a putback basket with 20 seconds remaining. That came after Zach Atkinson (Feather River) had put the Magic on top, 81-80, on a putback basket with 32 seconds left. Long Beach State had gone ahead, 80-79, on a jumper by Glenn with 55 seconds left. And that came after a basket by Chris Smith (LA Southwest) on a feed from Donte Smith had given Compton a 79-78 lead with 1:15 remaining.
Donte Smith finished with a game-high 24 points plus 8 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals. Robert Sallie (San Francisco) had 15 points while Atkinson had a double-double with 10 points, 11 rebounds and 4 blocked shots. Travon Harmon (Pasadena) also scored in double figures with 10 points.
For Long Beach State, Ronnie Frazier (Oxnard) had a team-high 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting. Glenn had 14 points plus a game-high 13 rebounds. Eules Thompson (LA Southwest) had 14 points plus team-highs of 6 assists and 4 steals. Chris Walton (West LA) also had 14 points while Nik Bradford (Riverside) had 12.
5 pm: USC 82, San Diego State 80 (Double OT)
About the only thing more dramatic than a last-second game-winning shot is sudden-death overtime, and that’s what happened in the penultimate game of the day as Dominique Cooper (Southwestern) scored after a feed from Dominic Smith to score the winning basket for USC.
This one also had a frantic finish in regulation time as Will Smith (Southwestern) scored with 20 seconds left to give USC a 78-76 lead only to see Josh Gordon (West LA) answer back with a basket with 3 seconds left to tie the game again and send it to overtime.
In overtime, Jesrael Bluntt (West LA) made a 2-point free throw to put USC ahead, 80-78, but Arnie Hollis (West LA) scored on a putback for San Diego State to tie the game again with 40 seconds left. Neither team scored again in overtime, sending the game to sudden-death.
Troy Payne (Citrus) led USC with 23 points and 14 rebounds. Moses Omolade (Southwestern) had 18 points, 8 rebounds and 3 blocks while Anthony Cannon (Chaffey) had 10 points. Cooper finished with 7 points while Dominic Smith did not score; the second of his two assists, however, was key in his team’s victory.
For SD State, Hollis led the way with a game-high 28 points. Charles Garcia (Riverside) had a double-double with 21 points, 11 rebounds and 4 blocked shots. Edwin Edukere (Citrus) had a solid game with 10 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists. Gordon had just 4 points but not only made a key basket but dished out a game-high 7 assists.
6 pm: San Diego Magic 102, Stanford 81
In the finale, six SD Magic players scored in double figures as the Magic raced to an easy win over Stanford.
Jamel McGuire (SD City) led the way with 20 points and 6 assists, while Tim Island (Long Beach State transfer) had a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Marvin Bettus (Southwestern) just missed a double-double with 19 points and 9 rebounds. David Kinder (SD City) had 13 points while Aaron Tinsley (Grossmont) and Brock Weber (Southwestern) each had 11.
For Stanford, Roy Walker (LA Southwest) led the way with 18 points and he also had 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Benjamin Guillory (Los Medanos) had 13 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists. Mychal Thomas (Eastern Wyoming) had 13 points, Marcus Frye (Kansas City MO) had 12 points and Gaylon Lemings (Los Medanos) had 10.
