#1-ranked LA City (24-1, 6-0 in SCC-North) got double-figure scoring from 5 players and held host Pasadena (7-16, 0-6) without a field goal for over 8 minutes early in the game, and that was more than enough for the Cubs to roll to a 25-point win Friday night at Hutto-Patterson Gym in Pasadena.
Pasadena led in the early going, but then LA City went on a 15-0 run to take control of the game. A basket by Ctr Shawn Simpson, his second of the game, tied things and a layup by SF David Cornwell after a feed from PG Everett Morgan gave the Cubs a lead they would hold the rest of the way. LA City’s other standout Center, Clarence Matthews, finished the run on a feed from SG Torrance Tucker, making it 17-4. Pasadena finally broke their scoreless drought when PF Jamal Myers scored on a putback with 10:10 left in the half.
But by then, LA City had a double-digit lead, and they would lead by at least 7 the rest of the way. SF Daniel Malwah knocked down a jumper to cut the margin to 9 at 19-10 later in the half, but LA City finished the first half on a 6-0 run thanks to PF Chad McKenzie, who scored a pair of baskets and fed Cornwell for another score. That gave the Cubs a 32-19 lead at halftime. And in the second half, LA City began with a 7-2 burst on 4 free throws by Matthews and a three by Cornwell that made it 39-21. Pasadena never threatened after that.
Matthews led LACC with 16 points while Simpson had 12; the Cub Center tag team had a total of 28 pts and 12 rebs. Cornwell and McKenzie each had 14 pts. SG Casey Gordon came off the bench to score 13 pts and grab 7 rebs. The starting backcourt combined for just 4 pts, Morgan dished out 7 asts and Tucker grabbed 9 boards, both team highs. Overall, LACC shot 56% from the floor and outrebounded the Lancers, 49-29.
For Pasadena, PG Garrett Pickens led the way with 19 pts and 5 asts. Malwah was the only other Lancer in double figures, scoring 12 pts but shooting just 5 of 19 for the night. SF Steve Collins had 8 pts and a team-best 5 rebs. Overall, the Lancers shot just 29% from the field.
In the women’s game, #1-ranked and undefeated Pasadena ran their record to 24-0 (5-0 in the SCC-North) with a 30-point trouncing of LA City (11-12, 0-6). SG Jeanine Deno drained a pair of 3-pointers in the game’s opening minute, staking the Lancers to a 6-0 lead, and they led the rest of the way.
LA City hung tough, trailing by just 12 at halftime (44-32) and cutting the margin to single digits in the second half’s opening minute after FG+FT 3-point play by SF Yajaira Sanchez. But then Pasadena went on a 15-0 run to take a 24-point lead and put the game away. By the time LA City scored again, on a free throw by Sophia Bedell, over 7 minutes had elapsed. And it wasn’t until 9:11 remained, after a drought of nearly 10 minutes, that the Lady Cubs scored a field goal (a long 2-pointer by PG Adriana Tovalin).
Deno led Pasadena with 24 pts (5 threes) on 9/13 shooting, and also had 5 asts and 4 steals. PG Samina Henry had 17 pts (5 threes), 3 asts and 6 steals. SF Dionne Pounds had an off-night shooting (just 3-for-15) but still managed 10 pts and a game-high 7 asts. PF Natasha Gray came off the bench to score 12 pts and grab 6 rebs. Starting PF Monique Diaz also had 6 rebs.
For LA City, Tovalin led the way with 27 pts, 9 rebs and 4 asts. Sanchez was the only other LACC scorer in double digits, scoring 10 pts. PF Susan Gonzales led all rebounders with 10.
