Saddleback 98, Cypress (women: Cypress, 89-53)

SG Mikel Watson scored 17 pts and Ctr Derek Risper added 15 as #2 Saddleback (22-2, 10-1) romped to a 30-point win at Cypress (9-15, 2-9) Wednesday night in Orange Empire play. Watson made 7 of 12 shots, including 3 threes, and dished out a team-high 6 asts, while Risper posted a double-double, grabbing 10 boards, for the Gauchos.

Saddleback led virtually the entire game. Risper opened the scoring on a feed from SF Justin Allen just 4 seconds into the game. Cypress’ Greg Mercer answered back to tie the game 2-2, and when Risper scored again to make it 4-2, Mercer again tied the score on a putback basket, making it 4-4. But that was as long as Cypress could keep pace.

Risper scored again to make it 6-4, and then Saddleback’s press began to take effect. Watson and Allen each scored on layups as the Cypress turnovers began to add up. Then PF Chet Johnson slammed home a basket after a steal and feed from Watson, making it 12-4. The Gauchos extended their lead to 9 at 15-6 on a FG+FT 3-point play by PG D.J. Smedley and pushed their advantage into double digits at 24-13 when Watson drained a three. Short jumpers by PF Dominique Ricks and SG Carlton Arnwine, both after steals, made it 30-17. The lead reached 15 when Arnwine made a pair of free throws to make it 34-19, and the Gauchos still led by 15 at the half at 42-27.

Once the second half began, Saddleback pulled away. A three by Watson made it 45-27. The lead reached 20 moments later after a pair of baskets by Risper, and after a FT by Allen and a three by Watson, the Gauchos led 53-29. Cypress rallied a bit after PF Sam Davis made 2 FTs and a three to make it 61-45, but that just spurred another Gaucho run. Johnson, SF Ramon Mendoza, Smedley and Johnson combined for an 8-0 run that made it 69-45, and the Gauchos cruised from there.

Cypress was led by Davis, who came off the bench but posted game highs of 18 pts and 10 rebs. SG Eric Taylor and PF Houstan Downey each scored 10 pts. PG Brandon Void dished out 6 asts and had his team’s only 2 steals.

In the women's game, #4 Cypress (21-4, 9-2) had an easy time of it, posting an 89-53 win over Saddleback (6-15, 1-10).

SF Rosalyn Omoruyi led the way with 24 pts, while PF Ana Fakatou had 19 plus 13 rebs. PG Brittany Imaku, who recently signed with San Jose State, had 14 plus 4 asts. SG Mia Seagraves had 11 pts plus 7 asts while PF Breezie James added 10 pts in a reserve role. For the game, Cypress outrebounded Saddleback by an astounding 48-18 margin.

PG Amanda Shaw led Saddleback with 15 pts. SF Nikki Mercado had 12 pts plus 7 rebs, while Ctr Alisha Bell had 11 pts.
