Ventura 74, Allan Hancock 68 (women: VC, 109-53)

It was a championship night in Ventura as both the men's and women's teams clinched WSC-Northern Division championships.

In the men's game, SG David Van Someren scored 17 pts, all in the second half, and grabbed 6 steals to spur #4 Ventura (21-4, 10-0) to a come-from-behind victory over #15 Allan Hancock (11-14, 5-6) Saturday night in Ventura. The 74-68 win clinches the Pirates' 4th straight WSC-North championship.

For much of the game, the visiting Bulldogs had the lead. But Ventura went on a 12-3 run during the game's last 3 minutes to close out the win.

In the early going, AHC went on a 12-2 run to take a 20-10 lead midway through the first half after SG Donte Strong made a short jumper and a 3-pointer. Ventura rallied a bit, but failed to take advantage of several opportunities to tie the game or go ahead. After that, AHC pushed its lead back into double digits at 33-22 after a steal and basket by Strong.

Ventura managed to rally to within 3 late in the half after baskets by SF Danny Mena and SG Charles Dillon. But Van Someren missed an open 3-pointer that would have tied the game. AHC increased its lead to 37-32 on a pair of free throws by PF Vernon Ramey, which is where things stood at the half.

When the second half began, Van Someren came out firing and got Ventura a lead. First came a steal & basket, and then after a Nunez block, Van Someren made a lay-up to bring Ventura within a point at 37-36. Then he fed Mena on the way to the basket. Mena drew the foul, and this time he made both free throws to give Ventura 38-37 lead. Then Van Someren continued the run with a three to make it 41-37.

But Ventura wasn't quite home free just yet. AHC rallied to tie the game at 43 on a jumper by SF Donte' Williams, and took a lead moments later on a basket by E. Johnson after a steal.

Ventura rallied again, and again it was Van Someren who led the way. First, he hit another three to give Ventura a 52-49 lead. Then, he stole the ball and passed to Dillon, who went in for a lay-up to make it 54-49.

But the Bulldogs were resilient, and despite dressing just 7 players they dug in and rallied to take the lead once again. Baskets by D. Johnson and E. Johnson erased most of the deficit, and a pair of free throws by Williams put AHC ahead 55-54.

The lead went back and forth for the next few minutes. AHC took a 63-62 lead on a pair of free throws by Ctr/PG Stewart Kussler with just under 4 minutes left.

But then Ventura went on its final run, and this time AHC would have no answer. VC pulled back ahead on a nice hook shot by PG Jonathan Davis. Then D. Johnson of AHC fouled out, sending Van Someren (of course) to the line where he made 2 free throws. Then Dillon scored to make it 68-63. Strong nailed a three to pull AHC within 3 at 68-66, but moments later Ramey fouled out, leaving AHC no more substitutes. And when PF Moses Gonzalez made both free throws, that gave Ventura a 70-66 lead with 1:23 left. Gonzalez pushed the lead to 6 moments later when he scored on a putback. Then, Van Someren fed Davis for Ventura's final basket to make it 74-66. Strong added a basket at the buzzer that changed the final score to 74-68.

Gonzalez matched Van Someren's scoring output, posting 17 pts and a game-high 11 rebs. Dillon added 15 while Nunez had 10 pts, 10 rebs and 6 blocked shots. Davis finished with 9 pts and a team-best 7 asts.

For AHC, it was a gutty effort. With just 7 players, two of which fouled out, they were a bit shorthanded. And the departure of their starting point guard (Kevin Rogers) last week left them in a difficult position. Ctr Stewart Kussler handled the point guard duties much of the night and finished with 13 pts, 7 asts and 6 rebs. Williams led AHC with 16 pts while E. Johnson and Strong each added 12. Ramey had a team-best 8 boards before fouling out. But the Bulldogs had 24 turnovers, and in the second half turned the ball over 10 times (compared to just 5 for Ventura). And in the final minute, they were unable to foul in an effort to come back since they only had 5 players available and two of them had 4 fouls.

In the women's game, six Ventura players scored in double figures and Ventura forced 49 turnovers as the host #8 Pirates (21-4) ran their WSC-North record to 10-0 and clinched its 15th consecutive division championship with a devastating 109-53 win over Allan Hancock (3-21, 2-9).

Threes by Tara Zarate and Perbey Pandac gave AHC a 6-0 lead in the early going, but then Ventura went on a 19-0 run to take control of the game. By halftime, the score was 42-25. Then Rebecca Kolbeck and Shannon Antunez each scored 6 points in the early part of the second half to push Ventura's lead to 25 at 58-33, and from there the rout was on.

Sascha Pack led all scorers with 16 pts, but this was a true team effort. Sheana Triana and Krystal Golden each had 15, while Kolbeck finished with 12. Antunez had 10 plus 7 rebs. And Karla Martinez had an extraordinary overall game with 10 pts, 7 rebs, 7 asts and 5 steals.

Pandac led AHC with 11 pts and a game-high 12 rebs; she posted a triple-double of sorts with 13 turnovers. Natalie Fell came off the bench to score 10 pts. Zarate dished out 7 asts. But the Bulldogs finished with more turnovers (49) than shots taken (42), opening the door to the huge loss.
