Ventura 84, Oxnard 76 (women: VC, 72-46)

Ventura Sweeps Doubleheader

PG Gregory Johnson had 25 pts and PF Moses Gonzalez had 28 to lead host Ventura mens team (20-5, 10-0 in WSC-N) to their third win over Oxnard (8-18, 4-7) this season. And SF Courtney Young scored 27 pts, 21 of them in the second half, as the Ventura womens team (23-3, 10-0) overcame a sluggish start to beat Oxnard (11-12, 4-7) Friday night.

In the mens game, Johnson had a strong all-around game to lead the Pirates. He finished with 25 pts on 9 of 16 shooting, grabbed 7 rebs and dished out 8 asts while committing just 1 turnover. Gonzalez led all scorers with 28 pts, and his 12 rebs tied teammate Ctr Cortez Swanigan for game honors. Swanigan got the start in place of ailing Danny Gray (thigh contusion) and Gary Nunez (hand) and added 7 pts.

Ventura went on a 9-0 run early in the game to take a 13-4 lead and led the rest of the way. Swanigan made a basket, Gonzalez made 2 FTs and then a bucket, and SG Hylas Smith drained a three in the run. The Pirates extended the lead to 24-8 on another three from Smith, single baskets by Swanigan and SF Elijah Muldrow and a pair of buckets from Johnson. Ventura continued to lead in double-digits the rest of the half and led 46-33 at intermission.

In the second half, things took a turn for the worse for Oxnard when PF James Hudson picked up his 4th foul in the first 3 minutes. He later re-entered the game, but fouled out in less than a minute. Hudson finished with 10 pts and 7 rebs when he sat down for good with 10:08 left.

Ventura continued to lead comfortably until Oxnard PF Dwan Robinson helped bring the Condors within 5 at 67-62. His basket, followed by a bucket from SG Marcus Travis and a three by Robinson, closed the gap to 5 with 4-1/2 minutes left. But they got no closer. Ventura still led by just 5 at 75-70 until Johnson hit a baseline jumper with 1:15 to make it 77-70. Johnson made 5 of 6 FTs in the final 49 seconds to allow Ventura to maintain the lead.

SF Lagunza Tibbs led Oxnard with 26 pts. Robinson had a huge game off the bench with 19 pts and 9 rebs. Travis added 16 pts and 8 asts, while PG Herman Hardy dished out 9 asts.

In the womens game, Young missed her first 11 shots and went 2 for 15 in the first half, but made 7 of her first 8 shots of the second half as the Pirates took control of the game. Oxnard led until a three by Young and a pair of FTs by SF Karly Castro put the Pirates ahead 18-17 with 2:39 left in the first half. A pair of jumpers by Young just after halftime helped Ventura extend its lead to 33-21 and it reached 17 at 43-26 a few minutes later. Ventura cruised from there.

Young led all scorers with 27 pts. Ctr Lottie Kanama, subbing for injured Kristine Gleisberg (foot injury), had 10 pts (on 5/5 FGs) and 9 rebs. PF Rachael Kolbeck added 8 pts, 7 rebs and 5 steals. PF Naome Johnson led Oxnard with 20 pts and 10 rebs.
