Tahniya Sweatt scored 19 pts in a most successful homecoming game to lead #2 Mt. San Antonio to a 67-51 win over host #4 Pasadena Friday night as Mt. SAC ran its record to a perfect 11-0 in SCC play.
Sweatt, who went to Muir HS in Pasadena, as did Mt. SAC's starting point guard, Shaela Flynn, was just one of three players to come off the bench for Mt. SAC and score in double digits. And though Flynn had just 3 points, she dished out a game-high 8 assists.
The defenses for both teams came out ready, and points were at a premium early on. Mt. San Antonio (23-4, 11-0) held a modest 2-1 lead until a steal & lay-up by Sweatt 6:40 into the game made it 4-1. Mt. SAC extended its lead to ten points at 15-5 after Pasadena (19-7, 8-3) missed its first 12 shots from the floor until a putback basket by PF Bailey Williams with 10:15 left in the first half.
Pasadena went on a 15-2 run to lead, 24-20, after a steal & lay-up by PG Desiree Loving with 1:46 left in the first half. Sweatt hit a short jumper in the final seconds of the half to bring Mt. SAC within two points at 26-24.
Pasadena led, 35-30, early in the second half, but then came Mt. SAC's 15-2 run. Lashanique Youngblood tied the game with a 3-point play that made it 35-35 with exactly 16 minutes to go, and Johnea Thompson gave Mt. SAC a 39-37 lead after scoring on a baseline drive. Mt. SAC led the rest of the way.
Flynn fed Sweatt for a basket, then hit a jumper from the top of the key to push Mt. SAC's lead to 43-37. Then Thompson scored on another drive to complete the run and make it 45-37 midway through the second half.
As the clock wound down, Mt. SAC extended its lead, pushing the margin to 11 points on Thompson's 3-point play that made it 60-49 with 4:25 left. Sweatt added a pair of baskets, sandwiched around a single free throw by Pasadena, to make it 64-50 with just under to minutes left, and her free throw with 1:12 left made it 65-50.
Thompson came off the bench for 12 pts on 5-for-6 from the floor and added 5 rebs and 2 blocked shots. Sabrina Norton also came off the bench and scored 10 pts. Tatyana Calhoun had 8 pts, and Youngblood had 7 pts and a team-high 7 rebs.
For Pasadena, Williams had 10 pts and a game-high 9 rebs to just miss a double-double, and also had 3 blocked shots. Thompson also had 10 pts and Loving had 9 pts, 7 rebs, 3 asts and 3 steals. Tyler Crockom had 9 pts, 4 rebs and 4 asts.
