Antelope Valley 58, Chaffey 56 (women)

#4 Antelope Valley (24-5, 11-2) won its 8th straight game to retain a share of the Foothill Conference lead, holding off a late rally from Chaffey (14-13, 8-5) in the final minute Wednesday night in Lancaster.

AVC entered having not only won 7 straight games, but all of them by double digits, and jumped out to a quick 17-5 lead in the first few minutes Wednesday night and looked to be on its way to another easy win.

But Chaffey dug in, and it turned out to be anything but easy for AVC as Chaffey scored six points in the final minute and had a chance to tie, but Kellie Moore's shot missed. Brittney Abram tapped the rebound back out to the perimeter with several seconds left, but Chaffey was unable to get another shot away, allowing AVC to escape with the 2-point win.

After AVC's early 12-point lead, Chaffey rallied to take a 28-25 lead late in the first half after a basket by Abram and a steal & lay-up by Kyla Smith. AVC tied it at 28 on a 3-pointer by Sideah Wilson. Chaffey's Stephanie Scott made one of two free throws with 31.9 seconds left in the half, but Wilson scored for AVC in the final seconds to give the home team a 30-29 lead at the break.

Chaffey got a driving lay-up and a 3-pointer from Rosalind Barnes in the first minute of the second half to take a 34-30 lead, but AVC answered with a 13-2 run to take a 43-36 lead after a driving lay-up by Wilson. Then Chaffey answered with a 7-0 spurt to again tie the score at 43 after a driving lay-up by Barnes.

Then AVC pulled into the lead. A basket by Brittani Jefferson and a 3-pointer by Tijera Mathews made it 48-43. A free throw by Kiara Cain pushed the lead to six points at 51-45, and a 3-pointer by Brandi Dawson gave AVC a nine-point lead at 54-45 with 7:40 remaining.

For the next six-plus minutes, points were tough to come by for both teams. Chaffey got within six points at 56-50 on a 3-pointer from Scott, but AVC pushed the lead back to eight at 58-50 on a short jumper by Cain with 1:50 left and it was still 58-50 as the clock reached the one-minute mark.

Then came the Chaffey rally, helped by a couple of AVC missed free throws. A driving lay-up by Smith made it 58-52 with 58.6 seconds left. Then when Chaffey got the ball back, Barnes made two free throws with 31.6 seconds left to make it 58-54. After a missed free throw (on the front end of a one-and-one) by AVC's Mathews, Barnes scored on a driving lay-up with 12.9 seconds left to make it 58-56. Then Chaffey fouled immediately, sending Wilson to the line for AVC, but she also missed the front end of the one-and-one with 11.4 seconds left, giving Chaffey a chance to tie or even win the game.

But Chaffey was unable to get the tying basket, allowing AVC to keep pace with Mt. San Jacinto and San Bernardino Valley atop the Foothill Conference with idential 11-2 conference records.

For AVC, Dawson had 15 pts and 3 steals, and Wilson had 13 pts. Mathews had 11 pts and 7 rebs.

Barnes led all scorers with 21 pts for Chaffey, and she also had 4 asts. But nobody else scored in double figures for Chaffey. Smith had 7 pts plus 5 rebs and a game-high 5 asts.
