PG Drew Sanchez scored 15 pts and dished out 8 asts to lead #5 West Valley (23-4, 10-2) to a 72-64 win over host #7 San Jose (21-6, 7-5) Saturday afternoon.
The game was close all the way, with SJCC holding a 1-point lead at the half and WVC leading by just 4 until Sanchez scored on a driving layup to make it 67-61 with 1:10 left to play. PF Ken Alexander scored on a putback moments later, and Sanchez added 3 free throws in the final seconds to secure the win for the Vikings.
West Valley jumped out to a 17-8 lead in the game's first few minutes, but San Jose rallied to tie the game at 24 and take a 1-point lead at 30-29. The Jags pushed their lead to 4 at 38-34 just before halftime before a three by SG Lamarr Hunt brought SVC within a point at the break.
In the second half, SJCC held a 49-47 lead when Sanchez stole the ball, drew a foul going to the basket and made a pair of free throws to tie the game at 49. Ctr Marcus Morgan and Hunt each made baskets to give West Valley a lead which it would hold the rest of the game.
SJCC stayed close though, trailing by just 2 at 61-59 after a pair of free throws by PF Reggie Smith and 65-61 after a finger-roll by SF Julian Conyers. But they could never quite catch the Vikings in the final minutes.
In addition to Sanchez, high scorers for West Valley included PF Kevin Fleming (14 pts), Alexander (13 pts, 7 rebs) and Hunt (11 pts, 3 threes).
San Jose was led by SG Tristan King, who had 15 pts and 4 asts. Smith had 13 pts and 7 boards while Conyers and SG D.J. Cyphers had 12 pts each. Ctr Jamal Harris grabbed a game-high 8 rebs.
