Norissa Sanders scored 23 pts and grabbed 16 rebs, and Summer Ramsey had 18 pts, 7 asts and 6 steals to lead #6 San Bernardino Valley to a 67-59 win over visiting #7 Chaffey, clinching the Foothill Conference championship Wednesday night in San Bernardino.
San Bernardino Valley (17-6, 9-0) used a 21-4 run to take an 18-point lead late in the first half, and held a 16-point lead midway through the second half. Chaffey (20-7, 6-3) rallied to within six points with just under five minutes to go, but then SBVC pulled away to secure the victory.
SBVC held a modest 18-17 lead before the 21-4 run that made it 39-21 late in the first half. Sanders hit a jumper to make it 26-19 and Ramsey scored on a lay-up to push the margin to double digits at 32-21. Then Ramsey scored on a Ginobili-like Eurostep move to make it 34-21. Raven Howard made two free throws and Ramsey made one to push the lead to 37-21. A steal & lay-up by Ramsey with about 20 seconds left in the half made it 39-21.
Chaffey got a 3-pointer from Shannon Moore with about 10 seconds left to make it 39-24 at the break, and drew even closer early in the second half. Chaffey got 3-pointers from Cierra Miles and Angelica Guardado to make it 39-30. And the scoreboard, which had initially gives the points from Miles' shot to SBVC, erroneously showed the score as 36-30.
The score was soon corrected, and SBVC soon pulled away again, pushing its lead back to double digits on a 3-point play by Sanders that made it 47-36 with 14:14 left. The lead reached 16 points at 53-37 on a short jumper by Michelle Agbarra with 11:54 remaining.
Chaffey ralled once more, cutting the deficit to single digits at 53-44 with 8:47 left, and then getting a little closer on a short jumper by Kahla Badibanga with 8:15 remaining. A long 3-pointer by Moore cut the deficit to six points - really, this time - at 56-50 with just under 5 minutes to play.
But that would be as close as Chaffey would get. Ramsey made two free throws with 3:57 left to push the SBVC lead back to double digits at 61-50. Guardado answered with two free throws for Chaffey, but then Sanders made back-to-back baseline jumpers to give SBVC a 65-53 lead with 1:50 left, and that pretty much wrapped up the win and the conference title.
Sanders' totals of 23 pts, 16 rebs and 4 blocked shots were all game-highs, and she added 2 asts and 2 steals. Ramsey's 18 pts were second-best and her 7 asts and 6 steals were game-highs. Agbarra added 10 pts on 5-for-7 from the floor.
For Chaffey, Moore scored a team-best 15 pts, which included 3 three-pointers. Guardado came off the bench for a double-double with 13 pts and a team-high 11 rebs.
