West LA Finishes With Win
PG DeJuan Stevens was one of six scorers in double figures for visiting West Los Angeles (18-11, 6-6 in WSC-S) in an 86-71 win over #8 College of the Canyons (19-6, 10-2) Friday night in Valencia.
The Oilers led all the way, jumping out to an 11-5 lead in the opening minutes on 4 pts by Stevens, a putback by PF Reggie Johnson, a three by Ctr Dado Kabov and a jumper by SF Phillip Givens. Givens then extended the lead to 11 on a pair of dunks, the second of one which came despite an intentional foul by COC's Cedric Davis. Givens made the ensuing FTs to make it 17-8. This kind of balance would continue all night for the Oilers, who had 6 players reach double figures in the scoring column.
West LA pushed their lead to 12 several times in the half, led by Givens' 12 first-half points. But COC closed the first half on a 7-0 run to cut the margin to 5 at 35-30 at the break. A short turnaround jumper by PG Carlton Spencer brought the Cougars to within 3 at 35-32 in the opening minute of the second half.
But a pair of baskets by Stevens pushed the lead back to 7 at 39-32, and soon after that West LA pulled away for good. Three consecutive threes – two by Kabov and one by Stevens, helped West LA take a 10-point lead at 48-38. Then SG Darnell Jones pushed the lead to 19 on a pair of threes and a pair of FTs, and the Oilers were never threatened the rest of the way.
Stevens led the Oilers with 22 pts and dished out 6 asts. Givens added 14 pts, 12 in the first half, and Jones added 13 pts, all in the second half. Johnson and Kabov each chipped in for 12 pts and PF Stephan Booth came off the bench for 11.
COC was led by Spencer, who had 27 pts, 7 rebs, 7 asts and 4 steals. D. Davis had his usual energetic game off the bench with 25 pts including a pair of threes. But no other Cougar scored more than 5 pts.
In the game, there were just 50 total rebounds, partly because there were so few missed shots but also because there were so many turnovers (52).
In the womens game, # 4 Canyons (22-5, 11-1 in WSC-S) clinched the WSC-South Division crown with a lopsided 112-47 win over last-place West LA (4-19, 0-12).
Ctr Jessi Loring was one of six Cougars to score in double figures, finishing with 21 pts, and PG Kaipresha Price had her usual superb performance with 19 pts, 13 asts and 6 steals. SF Linnae Barber (16 pts), SG Krystal Clay (14 pts), PF Tihynna DeBose (13 pts) and backup PG Erica Doyle (10 pts) also had big efforts. The Cougars shot 61% to just 27.5% for West LA in the rout.
COC jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the game's first minute and led 19-4 after 4:50 had been played. The halftime score was 58-20 after a 30-foot three by West LA PG Daunshae Andrews, but this game was pretty one-sided from the start.
Andrews led West LA with 10 pts and also dished out 6 asts. But she also had 14 of West LA's 44 turnovers. Ctr Teniqua Bennett had 9 pts and a game-high 9 rebs for the Oilers.
