Antelope Valley 104, Chaffey 79 (women: AVC, 80-59)

Ctr Jonathan Holland scored 34 pts and SF Wendell White narrowly missed posting a triple-double as host Antelope Valley (18-7, 7-3) blasted Chaffey (14-10, 7-3) in a key Foothill Conference matchup February 2nd.

AVC jumped out to a 17-2 lead in the first 5 minutes and led wire to wire. Wendell White scored 6 pts and PG Mike Webb nailed a pair of threes in the first 3 minutes to make it 15-2. At that point, Chaffey coach Jeff Klein pulled his entire starting lineup. But Walter White scored on a layup moments later to make it 17-2.

SF Phillip Scott hit a three to finally end the drought, and Chaffey rallied to within 8 at 26-18 on a pair of threes by PF Tony McFadden, a putback bucket by PG Sheldon Pace and a steal & layup by Pace.

But AVC pulled away again, largely on the strength of Holland's inside dominance. The Bear had 14 pts and 5 rebs as AVC built a 36-23 lead, but then he had to sit down after picking up his 3rd foul. Moments later, Wendell White picked up his third foul and also had to sit. This seemed to give Chaffey an opportunity to rally, since AVC's bench hasn't exactly been a strength this season.

This time, however, the reserves came through. SF Carlton Clay and SG Glenn Gilliard came on and not only held the lead, but allowed AVC to extend its lead to 14 at 53-39 at the end of the first half. Gilliard scored 7 of his 8 pts in the first half, and had 3 rebs and a blocked shot before the break. Clay had 4 pts, 2 rebs and 2 asts in the first half, and added 4 more pts in the second half.

The second half belonged to Antelope Valley. Holland scored 20 of his 34 pts after the break, and his putback basket made it 77-56 just over 5 minutes into the second half. Though he picked up his 4th foul with 14:58 left, Coach Newton Chelette kept him in and he not only kept scoring, but he never picked up his 5th foul. Webb hit his 4th three of the night to make it 87-58, marking AVC's largest lead of the game, midway through the half. After that, about the only suspense was whether or not Wendell White would get the rebounds he needed for the triple-double; he fell one board short. (note: props to AVC SID Glenn Haller for his integrity - he and I scored the game separately and each had Wendell with 9 rebs, and he resisted any urge to pad the stats for the sake of the triple-double. You passed the "honesty test"!).

Holland made 14 of 17 shots from the floor, and also grabbed 12 rebs to lead the Marauders. Wendell White had 19 pts, 11 asts and 9 rebs. Older brother PF Walter had 5 pts, 6 asts and a game-high 14 rebs. SG Ollie Bradley also had a strong game with 18 pts, 9 rebs and 6 asts. Webb added 12 pts, all on threes. And then there were the reserves, Clay and Gilliard, who each scored 8 pts.

Pace was about the only bright spot for Chaffey, finishing with team-highs of 16 pts, 6 rebs, 8 asts and 4 steals. SF Jason Harris added 14 pts, and McFadden scored 12.

In the womens game, host Antelope Valley (19-6, 9-0) took control of the Foothill Conference race with an 80-59 win over visiting Chaffey (17-7, 9-1) in a battle of two teams that entered the game unbeaten in conference play. SG Renita Mitchell scored 20 pts and PG Laurie Hodges added 18 to lead the Marauders.

Early on, Chaffey jumped out to an 8-4 lead on the strength of 3 baskets by SF Dominique Burque. A basket by PF Michelle Vega extended the lead to 12-6, and AVC helped the cause by committing 5 early turnovers.

But then came a 17-2 run that turned the game around. A turnaround jumper by PF Shacauna Woods tied the game at 14, and a short jumper by Woods gave AVC a lead they would hold the rest of the way at 16-14. A steal and layup by Ctr Mariqueta Starliing, a three by Mitchell and a basket by SF Sheena Crenshaw made it 23-14 with just over 6 minutes left in the haf. A steal that led to a pair of FTs by PG Shalonie Hutchinson gave AVC a 37-27 lead at intermission.

AVC extended its lead to 42-27 on baskets by Woods and Hodges, followed by a FT from Mitchell. A nifty 3-on-1 play, started on a steal by Crenshaw that led to a feed from SG Jennnifer Albertson to Hodges extended the lead to 48-30.

Then came Chaffey's rally, led by SG Crystal Abrego, which cut the margin to just 3 at 52-49. Abrego hit 3 threes and a pair of FTs, and PG Shanae Blake also made 2 FTs to get Chaffey within 3. But then AVC responded with a 12-0 run to put the game away. Baskets by Mitchell and Hodges, a steal and layup by Blake and a jumper by Ctr Tiffany Spottiswood made it 60-49. A layup by Woods made it 62-48, and a basket by Mitchell finished the run to make it 64-49 with 4:40 left. Chaffey never threatened after that.

Mitchell hit 8 of 11 shots to score her 20 pts, and Hodges was even more efficient, making 8 of 10 for her 18 pts. Hodges also dished out a team-high 5 asts. Woods finished with 14 pts and a game-high 8 rebs. And Crenshaw excelled on the defensive end with 7 steals.

Chaffey was led by Burque with 16 pts, though she shot just 5 of 16. Abrego had a very strong game with 15 pts, a game-high 6 asts and 4 steals. Blake had 12 pts and 3 steals. Ctr Latasha Howard came off the bench to grab a team-best 7 rebs.
