Ohlone 56, San Jose 39

In a showdown of Coast Conference divisional champions, #3 Ohlone (24-8) began the second half on a 17-0 run and blew out host #7 San Jose (24-8), 56-39, Saturday afternoon.

A rare late-season crossover game brought the North Division champion Renegades to San Jose to take on the South Division champion Jaguars. And the game was extremely close...for one half.

But once the second half began, Ohlone quickly took command. And by the time San Jose scored a single point in the second half, Ohlone already had enough points to win the game.

The first half was dominated by the defenses of both teams. Four minutes into the game, the score was 4-4 with all 4 of Ohlone's points coming on free throws by PF James Hancock. Then Hancock converted a 3-point play to give the Renegades a 7-4 lead.

San Jose took the lead with just over 12 minutes left in the half on a 3-pointer by SG Quinston Reggins. That would be the only 3-pointer of the first half for either team, and would be SJCC's only 3-pointer of the game.

San Jose had a 3-point lead at 19-16 before Ohlone rallied to go back in front, 23-21. Ohlone led 25-23 entering the final minute of the half before Reggins converted a FG+FT 3-point play with 54.1 seconds left to give San Jose a 26-25 lead at the break.

That would be San Jose's last scoring play for quite some time, enough time for Ohlone to take control of the game.

Hancock hit a short jumper to begin the 17-0 run and put Ohlone back in front with 18:10 left. Then he picked up a loose ball off a deflected pass and scored again to make it 29-26.

A 3-pointer by SF Kevan West made it 32-26 with 16:35 left. That was Ohlone's first 3-pointer of the game, but then West made another 35 seconds later to make it 35-26. Then Hancock knocked down a three of his own to make it 38-26 with 15:10 left.

West scored to make it 40-26, and was fouled on the play. He missed the free throw, but Hancock grabbed the rebound and scored on the putback to make it 42-26.

San Jose finally broke the run when PF Isiah James dunked with 13:52 left. Then James fed PG Javin Charlot for a lay-up to make it 42-30 with 12:45 left. And just less than two minutes later SJCC scored again on another jam by James to make it 42-32 with just less than 11 minutes remaining.

But that would be as close as the Jaguars would get. The Ohlone defense held San Jose to just 9 points in the second half until SF Brandon Criss hit a short jumper with 1:23 left. And by that time the game's outcome was no longer in doubt.

Hancock led all scorers with 20 pts, though amazingly he was the only player to score in double figures for the winners. West had 8 pts, all during the run to start the second half, and PG Tim Bowman had 7. Ctr Alpha N'Diaye had 6 pts but also pulled down a game-high 10 rebs and blocked 3 shots. SG A.J. Flournoy had 5 pts but grabbed 7 rebs and dished out a game-high 8 asts.

For San Jose, James led the way with 13 pts and 5 rebs plus 2 asts, 2 blocks and 3 steals. Reggins had 11 pts, but 10 were in the first half and he missed his last 9 shots from the floor. Overall, San Jose shot 30% from the field for the game and 25% in the second half.
