PG Ronald Howard scored 20 pts and dished out 8 asts to lead visiting San Bernardino Valley (16-7, 9-3) to a key Foothill Conference win over Barstow (9-12, 3-7) at James R. Parks Gymnamsium. The win keeps SBVC in second place and just a half-game out of first place in the highly competitive Foothill race.
It was a foul-filled game, and Howard took advantage of that by making 12 of 16 free throws on the night. He was one of four Wolverines to score in double figures, and his assist total was game-high. The SBVC depth was tested in the first half when the four players who normally play the Center position each had at least 2 fouls. But they held a 45-30 lead at halftime, and having so many strong inside players available meant SBVC always had a big man on the floor,. Gerald Garner and Isaiah Bryant eventually fouled out, but thanks to backups Jabbar Young and Reggie Ross Barstow was never able to get closer then 6 points down.
Early on it was tied, 6-6, when SG Bobby Bowlin entered the game. Bowlin spurred a 7-0 run with a feed to Young, a rebound and a jumper that put SBVC ahead, 13-6. They led the rest of the way. The lead reached 19 early in the second half when a putback basket by Garner and a dunk by SG Shawn McAllister made it 49-30. Barstow then went on a 15-2 run, spurred by reserve SG Travis Sobers, to close the gap to 6 at 51-45, but then SBVC pulled away again. Baskets by Young, SF Johnny Dukes and Howard, followed by a three by Bryant made it 60-45 and SBVC lead handily the rest of the way.
In addition to Howard, several SBVC players had strong games: McAllister had 15 pts, Dukes had 13 pts and a team-best 8 rebs, and Bryant had 13 pts and 5 boards.
For Barstow, Ctr Trumaine Ross led the scoring with 21 pts on 7 of 8 shooting. PF Dan Brigham had a strong game with 12 pts and 12 rebs. PG Justin Jones had 8 pts, 4 asts and 4 steals. But Barstow had 28 turnovers (SBVC had just 17) and never led after the opening minutes of the game.
In the womens game, SBVC got a stellar performance from Ctr Jasmin Wilson to win, 70-54. Wilson had 19 pts, 19 rebs and 7 asts – all game-highs – and scored 7 pts in the opening minutes as SBVC jumped out to a 13-2 lead. Barstow rallied behind SG Carole Jackson to cut the margin to 27-20 midway through the first half. But SBVC then went on a 10-0 run and led by double-digits the rest of the way.
In addition to Wilson, three other Wolverines scored in double figures: PF Alisa Moore had 14 pts and 9 rebs, PG Danielle Saulsberry had 12 pts and SF April Harris had 11 pts and 7 rebs. And SBVC played some tough defense, holding Barstow to just 23.5% shooting on the afternoon.
Barstow was led by Jackson's 16 pts. PF Britt'nee James had a huge game with 13 pts and 15 rebs. SG Sedra Curd had 10 pts and 7 rebs, while PG Donn-netta Coleman tied Wilson for game honors with 7 asts.
