Diablo Valley 89, Cosumnes River 44

SG Ronnie Baker had 25 points and 6 assists, PF Tyrelle Phillips had 18 pts and PG Brian Goins had 17 as #5 Diablo Valley absolutely demolished #12 Cosumnes River, 89-44, Tuesday night to re-establish a firm hold on second place in the Big 8 standings.

This one was complete domination. Diablo Valley (21-4, 8-3) didn’t dominate any statistics; they dominated all of them. The Vikings shot 48.5% compared to 32% for Cosumnes River, had more rebounds (46-24), fewer turnovers (8 to 17), more free throws (14-of-18 compared to 6-of-11), more 3-pointers (9 to 6), more blocked shots (2 to 0) and more steals (12 to 4).

For the game’s first five minutes, the game went back and forth with each team holding an early 3-point lead. But then Diablo Valley took a 21-11 lead after a 12-5 spurt, establishing a double-digit lead for the first, but certainly not the last, time with 10:09 left in the first half.

Cosumnes River (16-10, 6-5) cut the margin to seven at 21-14 moments later, but then DVC pushed its lead to 13 at 27-14 after a Goins 3-pointer with 7:01 left in the half.

And after that the lead just kept expanding. A pair of free throws by Baker made it 33-18 with 4:53 left. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Baker and SF Damon Jones made it 39-21 with 3:19 left, and a Jones free throw made it 40-21 with 2:30 left. A basket by Baker off an assist by Goins made it 42-21 with 1:21 left in the first half.

Cosumnes River scored the final basket of the first half to cut the deficit to 19 at the break, but Diablo Valley started the second half with a 16-1 run in the first four minutes of the second half to put the game completely out of reach. Goins’ 3-pointer made it 58-24 and turned the remaining 16 minutes of the game into prolonged garbage time.

Baker led all scorers with 25 points on 10-of-14 from the floor, with 3 threes, 6 assists, 5 rebounds, 2 steals and no turnovers. Phillips had 18 points on 6-for-10 and added 7 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal. Goins had 17 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals and no turnovers in a typically outstanding performance; he scored 40 points in DVC’s win over Cosumnes River last month. Jones had 13 points, including 4 threes, plus 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Nevada signee Ctr Rafael Carter was the only Viking starter not to score in double figures; he had 8 points and a game-high 9 rebounds. SF Daniel Zitani came off the bench for 8 points.

For Cosumnes River, the stats are grim but they would have been even uglier if not for some hot shooting by SG Tony Baldocchi, who scored 16 pts on 6-for-9 from the floor including 3 threes. He was the only Hawk to score more than six points, however, SF James Tillman had 6 pts and 4 rebs, and PF Tony Gill had 6 pts and 6 rebs. PG Allan Brown had 5 pts and a team-high 6 asts.
