SG Thomas Cooper and PG Delon Wright each scored 15 points as #1-ranked City College of San Francisco ran its winning streak to 19 games with an impressive 76-51 romp past #7 Foothill Wednesday in Los Altos Hills.
San Francisco (23-2, 9-0), which last lost in the championship game of the Fresno tournament back in November, clinched the Coast Conference North Division title with the win, though that really hasn't been in doubt for some time.
But the Rams showed why they are the #1-ranked team in the North, dominating a very solid Foothill squad while shooting 51.7% for the game. Four players scored in double figures for the Rams, and twelve different players scored.
Foothill (18-8, 6-4) led, 9-8, early on after a 3-point play by PF Dave Fullenwiley, but then San Francisco went on a 9-0 run to take a 17-9 lead midway through the first half.
And as the half continued, the CCSF lead continued to expand. A coast-to-coast lay-up by Cooper after a steal made it a 10-point game at 23-13 at the 8-minute mark. A slam dunk by PF Raysean Hairston from Cooper after a steal made it 25-13. A 3-pointer by Wright made it 32-17 with 4:15 left in the half, and a 3-pointer by Cooper at the buzzer made it 40-22 at the break.
When the second half started, CCSF expanded his lead a little further. Ctr Gabriel Aguirre scored on a right-handed hook shot 17 seconds into the half to make it 42-22, and SF Jamal Ford converted a 3-point play after a steal by Hairston to make it 45-22 with 18:37 left. At that point, CCSF was shooting a sizzling 63% (19-of-30) from the floor.
Then CCSF missed 7 straight shots, and Foothill rallied, going on a 13-0 spurt to cut the deficit to ten points at 45-35 after a 3-pointer by PF James Weiner with 14:39 to play. That spurt became a 17-2 run as Foothill got a jumper from Weiner to make it 46-37 and a basket from Fullenwiley inside to make it 47-39.
But then CCSF again took control, breaking off a 14-0 run to push the lead back to 22 points at 61-39. Two free throws by Cooper pushed the lead back to double digits at 50-39, then Wright hit a 3-pointer and a driving lay-up to make it 55-39. Baskets by Ford, sandwiched around two free throws by Aguirre, finished the run, and from there the outcome of the game was no longer in doubt.
For CCSF, Wright had a terrific game with 15 pts on 6-for-8 from the floor with 2 threes, 2 asts, 2 blocks, 6 steals and no turnovers. Cooper was also outstanding with 15 pts on 5-for-7 with 2 threes, 4 rebs, 4 asts and 3 steals. SG Ivan Dorsey came off the bench for 11 pts and 2 steals, Hairston had 10 pts and 5 rebs.
For Foothill, Fullenwiley had 11 pts plus a game-high 8 rebs and 3 asts. Ctr Brett McConnell had 10 pts and 5 rebs despite fouling out with 5 minutes to go. Ctr Jimmy Renneke came off the bench for 9 pts, 4 rebs and 2 steals.
