SF Jordan Block had 28 pts and Ctr Winston "Philly" Robinson had a double-double for host Chaffey (17-9, 6-4), which went on a 16-2 run late in the game to pull away from Desert (6-21, 2-9) Saturday afternoon and post a 96-79 win in Rancho Cucamonga.
Chaffey held just a 2-point lead at 73-71 with about 7 minutes left when the Panthers pulled away, thanks largely to the combination of Block and Robinson. A basket by Robinson got the run started, and a 3-point play by Block made it 78-71. Block also had a pair of free throws and a steal that led to a basket by SF Brandon Clemons later in the run, and Robinson's short jumper finished the spurt and made it 89-73, all but sealing a Chaffey win.
Desert trailed for much of the game, but stayed within striking distance until the decisive run. The Roadrunners saw Chaffey take a 13-point lead at 41-28 with 4 minutes left in the first half, but closed that gap to 6 at halftime and rallied to take a 51-50 lead early in the second half.
In the first half, Chaffey threatened to pull away early, taking an 8-2 lead early on and pushing that margin to as much as 13 points at 41-28 after a 3-pointer by PF Nickalas Turner. But Desert rallied, getting late baskets by Dayton and SF Julius Lang to trim the Panther lead to 6 points at the break.
And when the second half began, the Desert rally continued as the Roadrunners got baskets from PF Spencer Dayton, PG D'Andre James and Patrick Rochelle to tie the game at 48. And though Chaffey got a basket from Ctr Jeffrey Sawyerr to go back in front, 50-48, Desert's James scored and was fouled after pulling dow a rebound, and his good free throw not only completed the 3-point play but gave the Roadrunners a 51-50 lead.
That lead didn't last long, however. The advantage went back and forth for the next couple minutes. Then, with the score tied, 55-55, Chaffey got a 3-pointer from Block and a traditional 3-point play from PF Darryl Carlton to take a 61-55 lead, and never trailed again. But Desert managed to cut the margin to just 2 points at 73-71 before the decisive Chaffey run.
Foul trouble certainly took a toll on Desert. The Roadrunners committed their 7th team foul with 13:29 left, and lost starters Dayton and Patrick Rochelle to foulouts before the four-minute mark. In all, Chaffey went to the free throw line 33 times and made 25 of them, including 17 of 21 in the second half.
The Robinson jumper and the Block 3-point play started the 16-2 run. Then, after a block on the defensive end by Ctr David Renfroe, SF Troy Allen was fouled, and he made a free throw to make it 79-71. Then a pair of free throws by SG Jamal Sloan, which came on Dayton's 5th foul, made it 81-71. Just over a minute later, Rochelle fouled out, and Block made both free throws on that play to push the lead to 12 at 85-73. Then, after a steal by Block, Clemons scored to make it 87-73, and the jumper by Robinson made it 89-73.
For Chaffey, Block led all scorers with 28 pts, including 5 threes, on 9-of-12 shooting. He also had 7 rebs, 2 asts and 3 steals. Robinson, who is from Philadelphia, had 21 pts and 10 rebs plus 3 steals. And Clemons also reached double figures with 12 pts plus 5 rebs and 3 asts.
For Desert, Lang, despite still recovering from a recent bout with the flu, led the way with 22 pts, 6 rebs and 5 asts. James had a very strong game, posting a double-double with 11 pts and 10 rebs, and also dishing out a game-high 6 asts. Webb just missed a double-double with 18 pts and 9 rebs. Dayton managed 10 pts, 4 rebs and 4 asts before fouling out, while Rochelle had 6 pts and 10 boards before picking up his 5th foul.
The Roadrunners were without one of their top players, PG Antoine Davis, who is back home in Washington, DC, due to a death in the family.
The win improves Chaffey's record to 17-9 overall and 6-4 in the tough Foothill Conference. Desert, still appealing the loss of 14 games due to forfeit after a paperwork error, falls to 6-21 overall and 2-9 in the conference pending the final outcome of that appeal.
