5 PM: Compton Magic Blue 70, 49ers 63
Ctr Ephraim Williams (Ventura College) scored 14 of his game-high 20 pts in the second half as the Magic overcame a 38-30 halftime deficit for the win. PF Sterling Byrd (Yavapai AZ) posted a double-double with 16 pts and 10 rebs. PG Keoni Watson (Seward KS) had a strong game as well with 12 pts, 6 asts and 2 steals. SG Curtis Isom (LA Valley) led the 49ers with 12 pts while PG Justin White (Pinola TX) and Ctr Brandon Woods (Eastern AZ) each added 11. PF Ian Maxwell (Mt. San Antonio) came off the bench to score 7 and grab a team-best 9 boards.
6 PM: Vandals 87, Compton Magic Blue 47
The Vandals took on the other half of the Compton Magic (their white team) and posted a stunning 87-47 victory. The Vandals jumped out to a quick early lead, led by 18 at halftime and poured it on late. Ctr Chandon Simon (Irvine Valley) led the way with 17 pts and 14 rebs, but he had plenty of help. SG Timothy Taylor posted a double-double with 11 pts and a game-high 12 rebs plus 5 asts. SF Keith Allen (Mt. San Antonio) had 17 pts, 5 rebs and 7 asts and PF Eric Ehue had 14 pts on 7/10 from the floor. PG Andrew Gomez (East LA) helped orchestrate the thrashing and finished with 13 pts plus 5 asts. Ctr Joe Johnson (LA Trade Tech) was one of the few bright spots for the Magic, showing a lot of athleticism en route to 12 pts, 7 rebs and 6 blocked shots.
7 PM: Seminoles 86, Tigers 76
The next game featured a pair of teams made up of miscellaneous players: The Tigers and the Seminoles. It was an up-tempo full-court style game, and in the end the Seminoles came out on top, 86-76. SF Glenn Gilliard (Antelope Valley) was one of five Seminoles to score in double-digits, leading the way with 19 pts. SG Muhammed Wilson (Mt. San Jacinto) added 17 on 7/11 shooting and PF Thomas Taylor had a strong all-around game with 16 pts, 9 rebs, 6 asts and 3 steals. The Seminoles led virtually the entire game, including by 8 at halftime. PF Anthony Kimble (Rio Hondo) had a huge game for the Tigers, finishing with game-highs of 26 pts and 11 rebs.
8 PM: Compton Magic Blue 61, Compton Magic White 46
In what was billed as the main attraction, a matchup of the two Compton Magic teams, it was the inside strength of the blue team that was the difference. PF Gary Nunez (Ventura) came off the bench for the blues, but made 4 of 6 shots, tying for team honors with 11 pts. He also grabbed 9 rebs, which was game-high. Ephraim Williams added 9 pts and 6 boards while Sterling Byrd had 8 pts and 5 rebs. Keoni Watson was again superb, scoring 11 pts while dishing out 3 asts and registering 4 steals. PF Chike Ekweozor led the white team with 11 pts on 4/5 shooting, while PG Kenneth Maye (LA Trade Tech) had a solid game with 9 pts, 3 asts and 5 steals.
9 PM: Vandals 112, Seminoles 83
This game pitted the two assembled teams that were victorious in their first game, the Seminoles and the Vandals. The first half was fairly close, as the Vandals held just a 48-41 lead at halftime. But in the second half, the Vandals ran wild, scoring 64 points (more than either Compton Magic team had scored in the previous game – the entire game) and claiming the day's unofficial crown with a 112-83 victory.
This one was a fast-paced shootout as both teams sought and took advantage of fastbreak opportunities virtually the entire game. SG Timothy Taylor had a remarkable game with 26 pts, 8 rebs, 8 asts and 5 steals. But he was hardly alone as several Vandals posted gaudy statistics. Ctr Chandon Simon made 10 of 12 shots from the floor, including a three, for 21 pts, plus 10 rebs. PG Andrew Gomez (East LA) had 15 pts plus 10 asts. PF Pierre Djinki (John A Logan IL) posted a double-double with 13 pts and 10 boards. SF Keith Allen (Mt. San Antonio) posted his own double-double with 11 pts and 11 boards. And SG Ian Wright (Mendocino) came off the bench to score 18 pts. For the Seminoles, PF Jared Lloyd led the way with 23 pts on 10 or 14 shooting. PG Keilon Fortune (Compton CC) added 19 pts, while SG Muhammed Wilson (Mt. San Jacinto) had a double-double with 10 pts and 10 asts.
9 PM: 49ers 62, Tigers 59
After the Vandals/Seminoles game ended, the game on the other court was just winding up. SG Curtis Isom (LA Valley) knocked down a jumper for the 49ers to tie the game at 59, sending it to overtime. After a 2-minute extra period, it was still tied at 59 so the teams started a second OT that was sudden-death. Each team had several opportunities to score, but the game remained tied until PF Sam Davis (Cypress) of the 49ers drained a straight-on three to give his team the 62-59 win. (Sorry, but since there's no box score for this game since all but the end of it happened at the same time as the Vandals/Seminoles game).
