SF Edmound Elzy sank a pair of FTs with 9.6 secs remaining to give visiting Barstow (12-4) a hard-fought victory over San Bernardino Valley (15-6). Elzy finished with a game-high 27 pts, including a perfect 7-for-7 from the foul line, and scored 17 of his pts in the second half.
Elzy's FTs came after San Bernardino Valley had battled back from an 8-point deficit in the final minutes. Things looked ominous for the Wolverines when PF Blake Walker fouled out with 5:55 left and the home squad down, 78-70. But a pair of 3-point FGs by Damio Ware helped get SBVC back in the game, and the defense held Barstow without a point for 4-1/2 minutes. And a 3-pointer by SG Roc Cameron gave SBVC an 80-78 lead with 3:20 to play. And when Barstow PG Corey Stinson fouled out on a charging call moments later, it looked like SBVC was in control.
But the Vikings refused to give in, and re-took the lead on a 3-pointer by SG Jay Sherrod with 1:27 to go, making it 81-80.
SBVC tied the game seconds later when PG Will Funn made a free throw, but Funn missed a second free throw, leaving the score 81-81 with 1:21 to play.
Neither team was able to score on their next possession. It came down to Barstow having the ball for the final shot. But before the Vikings could get a shot away, Elzy was fouled by SG Roberto Stukes. That sent him to the line for his game-winning free throws.
SBVC had a final chance to tie the game, but Funn's runner in the final seconds bounced off the rim. SF Preston Norman grabbed the rebound, but his putback attempt at the buzzer also bounced out, giving Barstow the 83-81 win.
Barstow led 51-40 at halftime, powered by Sherrod's 17 first-half pts. Their lead reached a high of 14 pts when Elzy scored a FG+FT 3-point play to begin the second half.
