The return of Ctr Joakim Kjellbom and PG Steve Scoggin helped host Irvine Valley (13-5) to a hard-fought 66-51 win over Orange Coast (13-8) in a foul-filled game Wednesday night.
Kjellbom scored 11 pts and led all rebounders with 14 boards in his return to action after straightening out some visa problems. The Swedish 7-footer also blocked 4 shots to lead the Laser defense, which held OCC to an anemic 24% shooting on the night.
Scoggin, returning after a one-game suspension, scored 12 pts and handed out 6 asts for the winners.
It was a rough game with some flaring tempers and a lot of whistles. OCC was assessed a total of 35 fouls, including 3 technicals and an intentional foul. Five OCC players fouled out of the game. IVC was assessed 21 fouls including a technical.
Irvine Valley led by 11 at halftime. After leading by just a bucket midway through the half, IVC went on a 15-2 run to build a 31-16 lead and led 33-22 at the break.
In the second half, Orange Coast rallied to within 5 at 34-29 and 6 at 47-41 but were never able to wrest the lead from Irvine Valley. But the game was much closer than the final 15-point margin might indicate as IVC pulled away late.
Orange Coast, playing without star guard Stephon Seals, finished a miserable 8-30 from the floor in the first half, but followed it with an even-worse 8-37 in the second half. They were never able to figure out IVC's tough zone defense, though they committed just 9 turnovers in the game. SG Aaron Bobik was the only scorer in double figures with 12, but shot 3-of-15 from the field. Ctr Matt Hatch led Pirate rebounders with 7.
For Irvine, forwards Danny Lambert and Micah Lombard each had a big half. Lambert scored 14 of his game-high 18 pts in the first half, while Lombard rebounded from a miserable first half (0 pts, 3 rebs, 4 turnovers) with 16 pts and 6 rebs after intermission.
