Ventura 88, Allan Hancock 75

Some hot shooting by SG Jamie Sanchez and a solid all-around team effort enabled host Ventura (15-6) to top Allan Hancock (10-12) in a WSC-North game Thursday night. Sanchez, who finished with a game-high 23 pts, nailed a pair of perimeter shots to spur the Pirates to an 11-0 run early in the second half, and Ventura led by at least 8 the rest of the way.

It was a true team effort for Ventura. Their leading rebounder was Matt Colton (12 boards), who was the 4th sub off the bench. SF Elijah Muldrow had 15 pts, and his lay-up with just under 2 mins left ended a 7-0 AHC rally, made the score 82-72 and ended all doubt about the game's outcome. PG Rashien Little had a game-best 7 asts, and backup PG Roosevelt Bolden nearly matched that total with 6 of his own. Ctr Aaron Watson contributed 5 pts, 8 rebs and 5 blocks, while backup Ctr Danny Gray tossed in 10 pts and grabbed 5 boards.

In all, 9 Ventura players made significant contributions to the win. And a key area of dominance was the boards, where VC held a 48-30 advantage. The Pirates also shot 52% from the field for the game.

AHC trailed by just 3 at the half, powered in large part by PF Terrell Young, who finished with team-highs of 17 pts and 7 rebs. Young had 12 of AHC's 40 first-half points. The Bulldogs still trailed by just 3 before the Sanchez-led run extended the margin to 64-50. A 3-pointer by reserve Fwd Anthony English brought AHC to within 8 at 80-72 before Sanchez fed Muldrow for the game-clinching layup.

In addition to Young, AHC standouts included PG Talani Calhoun (15 pts), SF Don English (11 pts, 5 rebs, 4 asts), SG David Romero (9 pts, 6 asts) and reserve Fwd Anthony English (9 pts).

A pair of perimeter shots by Sanchez spurred VC onto an 11-0 run early in 2nd half (from 53-50 to 64-60) and the Pirates led by at least 8 the rest of the way. After an A.English made it 80-72, a Sanchez feed to Muldrow for a layup with just under 2 mins left clinched it for VC.
