Glendale Sweeps Doubleheader over Citrus

Behind a standout performance from Ctr Mark Felder, a usual strong game from PG Alton Preston and an injection of energy from reserve SG Jino LaBomme, host Glendale (9-14) toppled #10 Citrus (17-5) for the second straight time.

Felder, who finished 10 of 12 shooting and also grabbed 6 boards, led the way for the Vaqueros. Preston had 12 pts, 6 asts and 3 steals for Glendale, which also handed Citrus a defeat in a San Diego tourney last month.

And the spark plug was LaBomme, who scored all 8 of his points during a 1-minute span midway through the second half. His outburst turned a 44-43 Citrus lead into a 51-44 Glendale advantage, and the Vaqueros led the rest of the way. LaBomme nailed a 3-pointer, was fouled trying another three (and made all 3 FTs) and a layup during his spurt. He finished with 4 rebs, 2 steals and Glendale's only blocked shot of the night.

After spotting Glendale an early 15-7 lead, Citrus rallied to take their first lead of the game on a layup and FT by SF Doug Little with 6:02 left in the first half. The teams played on even terms the rest of the half until Glendale took a lead on a pullup 3-pointer by Preston in the final seconds before halftime. It remained a see-saw affair until the LaBomme-led run. Glendale had a 10-point lead at 56-46 with just over 8 mins left and never led by less than 5 the rest of the way.

Citrus was led by SG Ralph Steele, who finished with 13 pts. PF Scott Metcalfe and reserve G Larry Monroe scored 10 pts each. Little had a strong overall game with 9 pts, 6 rebs and 5 asts. PG Chris Reaves had a game-high 7 asts.

-------------

In the women's game, Glendale (13-10) blew open a close game in the second half and completed the doubleheader sweep, 78-47. PF Kelly Patterson scored 15 pts and grabbed 19 rebs to lead the Lady Vaqueros. PG Denisha McCoy flirted with a triple-double, finishing with 16 pts, 11 asts and 7 rebs. SF Ashika Lakhan had 15 pts and 13 rebs, and Ctr Nabosa Basse had 18 pts.

Citrus (7-12), trailed just 33-29 at halftime. The Lady Owls were led by PG Shahkan Lewis (11 pts, 8 asts) and PF Charlene Guerrero (13 pts, 10 rebs). Ctr Aracely Contreras came off the bench to grab 9 boards before injuring her knee, and her absence was a big factor in Glendale's blowing it open late.
