Host Canyons (7-7) got off to a hot start against #15 Fullerton (8-6) and led virtually all the way in their final non-conference matchup Sunday night in Valencia.
PF Cedric Davis had a huge game with 18 pts and 11 rebs, and even made a three. SG Curtis Dunwoody also had 18 pts (4 threes). SF Carlton Spencer, who had a triple-double vs. Antelope Valley in COC’s last game, had another strong all-around effort with 15 pts (3 threes), 9 asts and 7 rebs. And Ctr Andrew Morris had 17 pts on 6/9 shooting.
The Cougars hit 13 threes on the night, and made 12 of their first 16 shots (including 6 threes) to build a 32-18 lead in the first 12 minutes. Though the Cougars cooled down a little after that, they still led by 12 at the half, 45-33. Fullerton closed the margin to 7 late in the game behind the strong shooting of SF Bryce Sheldon, but COC was never really threatened. PG Jordan Surratt nailed a pair of threes to push COC’s lead to 17 at 72-55 midway through the second before Sheldon helped the Hornets close the gap to 73-66. But Spencer knocked down a three, scored a FG+FT 3-point play and drained a pair of FTs to put COC back ahead by 10 at 81-71 and basically clinch the win.
Sheldon had a huge game in his first outing in nearly 2 months (following knee surgery). The South Carolina-bound sophomore made 10 of 21 shots (6 threes) for 26 pts, and added 4 asts and 5 steals. Ctr Michael Earl had a strong game with 19 pts, 6 asts, 4 asts and 3 blocks. PF Ron Dunlap added 16 pts and 9 boards. But the Hornets were outrebounded 43-28 and were never quite able to overcome COC’s hot start. And they were also without standout SG Chris Williams, who was benched for disciplinary reasons (lackluster effort in practice).
