College of the Canyons (9-4) got a huge game from Ctr Andrew Bruckner and shot 60% from the floor to beat visiting Porterville (7-6), 83-72, January 3rd. Bruckner finished with 16 pts, 9 rebs and 10 blocks to miss a triple-double by the narrowest of margins. His dominant presence in the paint helped hold Porterville to 36.5% on the night, including just 28% in the first half.
COC began the game on a 14-5 run as they made 7 of their first 8 shots. Porterville rallied to tie it at 15-15 on a runner by SG Dominic Perry before COC pulled away again to lead by 7 at halftime, 37-30. Though Porterville made just 7 of 25 first-half FG attempts, they made 14 of 18 FTs as COC was called for 13 fouls, which allowed the Pirates to stay close. But COC began the second half on an 8-0 run to take a 45-30 lead, and pushed the lead to 17 at 49-32 on a Bruckner layup. Just when it looked like COC would win easily, Porterville rallied to make things interesting in the final minute, as the rallied to trail by just 5 at 77-72 after a three by PF Anthony Mackell with 1:08 to play. But a pair of FTs by SG Alex Dunwoody made it 79-72, and when PF Durell Davis made 1 of 2 FTs it became 80-72. A steal by PG Curtis Dunwoody, who fed the ball to his brother Alex for a layup, made it 83-72, and another FT by D. Davis rounded out the scoring.
(Also, beginning sometime in the middle of the second half, the scoreboard was apparently in error. I noticed it when I had it 69-54 in favor of Canyons but the scoreboard had it 68-55. The board showed the final as 82-73 and showed Porterville as closing the gap to 76-73 with 1:08 left. However, I went to the table after the game to check to see if/where I made the error, and the book confirmed my figures that the actual final score was 83-72. Not exactly a homecourt advantage, eh?).
Alex Dunwoody led the Cougars with 17 pts, while his younger brother Curtis added 12 pts and 5 asts. SF Carlton Spencer had 10 pts and 9 asts. PF Durell Davis came off the bench to add 13 pts and 6 boards. Overall, COC shot 60% on FGs (35/68) but strangely shot only 46% (11/24) from the FT line, and except for Alex Dunwoody (who went 7/7) that figure drops to 23.5%.
Porterville was led by Ctr Rob Haynes, who had an excellent game with 19 pts and 13 rebs, and Perry, who had 19 pts including 3 threes. SF Clarence Watkins added 12 pts and 7 rebs in a reserve role, and PF Anthony Mackell had 11 pts and 5 rebs from off the bench. PG Jon Bartlett had 6 pts, 7 asts and 3 steals.
