Antelope Valley 86, Desert 76

It was a closer game than expected, but once #2 Antelope Valley (13-4) got all 5 of its starters on the floor, the Marauders took control of the game and topped a persistent College of the Desert (6-9) squad at AVC January 5th.

PG Mike Webb led AVC with 20 pts, including 6 threes, and had a game-high 6 asts. Ctr Jonathan Holland had a dominant game with 14 pts, 13 rebs and 3 blocks for the winners. Walter White also had a double-double with 11 pts and 12 rebs, while Wendell White added 16 pts.

AVC jumped out to leads of 14-4 and 39-26 in the first half only to see Desert rally both times, and at the half AVC led by only a point at 42-41. Holland was held out of the starting lineup (late to the shootaround), but controlled the middle until picking up his 3rd foul just before halftime. And Wendell White arrived (following a weekend trip out of town) during the first half and didn't play before intermission.

As the second half began, COD tied the game on a putback basket by Ctr Troy Beebe about 2 mins in, and took a 46-44 lead on an acrobatic up-and-under layup by PG Fredrick Bernard moments later.

But then Holland entered the game, giving AVC its usual starting 5 (Holland, White, White, Webb and Ollie Bradley) for the first time all night. And the result was a 12-0 run that gave the Marauders a 56-46 lead. A block by Holland started it off, followed by a basket by The Bear to tie the game. Another Holland bucket gave AVC a 48-46 lead, and a three by Webb made it 51-46. Bradley added a three, followed by a basket by Webb to make it 56-46. Though AVC never really pulled away, COD never really threatened to take the lead after that.

COD got several outstanding efforts in defeat: Bernard led all scorers with 21 pts (4 threes) and led COD with 5 asts. Meanwhile, SF Ruben Mitchell ruled the boards with 15 pts and 18 rebs, plus 3 asts, 3 blocks and 4 steals. SG Julius Lang added 17 pts on 7/11 from the floor.

All 5 regular starters for AVC finished with double figures in the scoring column. Bradley had his usual solid all-around game with 11 pts, 5 asts and 2 blocks. PF Carlton Clay, who got a rare start, contributed 9 pts for the Marauders.

It was "retro" night for AVC, who wore 1999-era jerseys - hence the different-than-usual numbers for several players. Holland was held out of the starting lineup due to being late to shootaround; Wendell White returned from a weekend trip out of town during the first half and entered the game at halftime.
