#9 Ventura 88, Moorpark 77 (women: VC, 74-55)
Ctr Gary Nunez scored 25 pts and SF Charles Dillon added 17 but the real story was super-sub PF Danny Mena, who came off the bench to score 12 pts, grab 14 rebs and dish out 7 asts as #9 Ventura (11-5) posted its 6th straight win.
Moorpark jumped out to an early 21-17 lead, at which point Coach Greg Winslow angrily addressed his starters for their sloppy play. Included in that was the benching of PF Moses Gonzalez. In came Gonzalez' cousin, Mena.
And Mena was so effective that he played the rest of the game until he was removed in the final minute to the applause of the happy Ventura fans.
Ventura rallied to take a 40-33 lead late in the first half, though Moorpark (6-10) cut into the margin when SF Chad Acerboni banked in a three at the end of the first half to make it 44-40.
But when the second half started, Nunez made a pair of baskets to push Ventura's lead to 8. The Pirates' lead fluctuated between 4 and 8 for the next 10 minutes until Mena scored on a FG+FT 3-point play to extend the margin to 11 at 66-55. Nunez added a pair of baskets, sandwiched around a Moorpark score, to push the lead to 14 at 71-57. A pair of threes by SG David Van Someran a couple minutes later made it 78-59 and cemented the win.
Nunez led all scorers with 25 pts on 12 of 18 shooting, and he also had 8 rebs and 3 blocks. Dillon made 7 of 9 shots from the floor for his 17 pts, and he dished out 7 asts while grabbing 4 steals. PG Jonathan Davis had 9 pts and 5 asts. Van Someran finished with 10 pts while SG Kenji Rocket had a strong game off the bench with 9 pts, 4 asts and 3 steals. For the game, Ventura shot 63% from the field, which more than offset their 27 turnovers.
PG Keith Lawrence led Moorpark with 16 pts. SF Tyler Carr (13), PF Mark Wells (12), Ctr Jeremiah Turner (12) and SG Kevin Thrower (11) also scored in double figures.
In the womens game, Ctr Sheana Triana scored 19 pts (4 threes) to lead #9 Ventura (9-7) to a 19-point win over Moorpark (8-9).
PG Shannon Antunez also had a strong game with 15 pts (3 threes), 6 asts and 4 steals. Ctr Tina Stetson had 6 pts and a game-high 8 rebs. SG Sascha Pack came off the bench to add 10 pts for the winners.
Moorpark led 5-4 early before threes by Antunez and Pack spurred Ventura to a 12-5 lead. By halftime, Ventura led by 12 at 34-22. Moorpark cut into the lead, mainly due to the outside shooting of PG Jamie Rauchwarger, to trail by just 5 at 38-33 early in the second half. But then came threes by SG Kristina Golden and Triana and the Pirates pulled away once again.
Rauchwarger led Moorpark with 19 pts and 3 asts in a very strong effort. Ctr Brooke Peterson had 11 pts and 8 rebs.
