Glendale 79, Bakersfield 78 (women: BC, 85-57)

Ctr Durwin Williams sank 2 FTs with 1.7 seconds left to give #12 Glendale (11-5, 1-0 in WSC-South) a 79-78 win over visiting Bakersfield (9-8, 1-1) Saturday night in Glendale. Williams was fouled after rebounding his own missed putback attempt, which came after he rebounded SF Mike Newton’s miss in the final seconds. The free throws negated a valiant Bakersfield comeback that saw the Renegades overcome a 14-point second-half deficit to take a one-point lead with 1:09 to play.

In the first half, Glendale went on an 8-0 run to open a 36-24 lead late in the half, and led 40-28 at intermission. And for much of the second half, it looked like Glendale would have an easy win in their conference opener. But Bakersfield rallied to tie the game at 65 on a putback basket by Ctr Mario Malave with just over 7 minutes left.

Glendale pulled away again to lead by 7 on a pair of baskets by SF Antony Phillips and a three by PF Tyler Rose, making it 75-68 with just over 5 minutes left. But Bakersfield rallied again on a turnaround, fall-away three by SG Tyler Monk, a basket by PF Richard Moss and a layup by Monk after a steal by SF Chris Smith. That made it 75-75 with 2:30 left. Monk’s three was a particularly impressive effort, not only for the degree of difficulty but because at that point he was 2-for-15 from the floor in the game.

Glendale took a 77-75 lead on a pair of free throws by Newton with 1:25 left. But then Bakersfield got the lead on a pullup three by Monk with 1:09 left, giving the Renegades their first lead of the second half. Then Glendale failed to score on their next possession, and Bakersfield’s Malave got the rebound and passed to PG Marquintice Davis, who was fouled. But Davis missed the free throw, the front end of a one-and-one, giving Glendale one last chance to win the game.

The ball went to Newton in the corner, but his shot bounced off the rim to Williams. And when Williams shot, his attempt was blocked by Malave. But the ball went back to Williams, who tried another shot as the clock wound down. The shot missed, but the whistle sounded and Bakersfield’s Monk was charged with the foul (his fifth of the game).

After Williams made the free throws, Bakersfield still had 1.7 seconds to try to win the game. But Moss threw the inbounds pass a little too high, and the ball deflected off a ceiling beam, turning the ball back to Glendale. When Glendale inbounded the ball, Malave slapped the ball away but the buzzer sounded before he could get control.

Bakersfield lost despite a monster game from Malave, who finished with 37 pts and 14 rebs. Davis added 13 pts and 5 asts while Monk had 12 pts, though the Bakersfield backcourt combined for just 11-of-37 from the floor.

Williams led Glendale with 25 pts and 9 rebs. Rose added 14 pts and 7 boards, while Newton finished with 10 pts.

In the women’s game, Bakersfield (11-6, 2-0) won decisively over #15 Glendale (10-6, 0-1), 85-57. Ctr Sarah Ortiz scored 23 of her game-high 31 points in the second half to break open a close game; Ortiz scored her team’s first 15 points of the second half as the Renegades went ahead, 58-43.

PF Nicole Goss narrowly missed a triple-double with 16 pts, 17 rebs and 9 asts. SF Ashley Nichols also posted a double-double with 12 pts, 10 rebs and 6 asts. Bakersfield outrebounded the host Vaqueros 69-40 and also held Glendale to 26% shooting for the game.

PG Shannon Kegley led Glendale with 18 pts and 5 asts. PF Jerniece Johnson had 16 pts and 9 rebs.
