PF Durell Davis came off the bench to score 19 pts, and Ctr Andrew Bruckner posted a double-double to lead host Canyons (11-4) past Santa Monica (6-9). The win allowed the Cougars to move to 2-0 in the WSC-South, and also gives them more wins this season than they posted last season when they finished 10-20.
D. Davis provided his usual injection of energy, and made 9 of 14 FGs, while adding 5 rebs, 5 asts and 4 steals. His 12 first-half points allowed COC to take a 35-30 lead at the break. Early in the second half, COC threatened to blow the game wide open, taking a 56-39 lead with 13:08 to play.
But Santa Monica hung tough, rallying to trail by just 6 at 60-54 with 8:21 left. Then, however, COC pulled away again on a jam by Durell Davis, a putback by Bruckner and a jumper by Fwd Cedric Davis to make it 66-54. COC was never seriously threatened again.
Bruckner finished with 12 pts, 13 rebs and 5 blocks for the Cougars. SF Carlton Spencer had a huge game with 13 pts and 12 asts. PG Curtis Dunwoody and Cedric Davis each scored 10 for COC.
Santa Monica was led by SG Eric Jones, who had 11 pts, 6 asts and 5 steals. PG Jonathan Smith also had 11 pts. Ctr Egemen Alpay grabbed a team-high 10 rebs.
In the womens game, #4 Canyons (13-4) topped #14 Santa Monica (11-6), 91-79. Ctr Jessie Loring led the way with 19 pts and 16 rebs for the Cougars. SG Krystal Clay and PG Kaipresha Price each added 16 pts, and PF Tihynna DuBose had 12 pts despite fouling out with 12:42 left. Santa Monica was led by PG Bobbie Graham (19 pts, 8 rebs, 11 asts, 9 steals) and PF Rhonda Johnson (18 pts, 9 rebs).
