SF Danielle Smith had 20 pts, 8 rebs and 5 asts, and PF Nicole Villalobos had a double-double with 12 pts and 14 rebs as #9 Mt. San Jacinto toppled #6 Chaffey, 54-48, in Foothill Conference play Saturday afternoon in Rancho Cucamonga.
Mt. San Jacinto led most of the game, overcoming an early 5-0 Chaffey lead with a 7-0 run and never giving up the lead. The margin reached 10 points late in the first half, and Mt. San Jacinto had a 26-17 advantage at the break.
Mt. San Jacinto held a single-digit lead throughout the second half. But Chaffey closed the gap to just a point at 45-44 with 3:41 left in the game after a pair of free throws by SF Aundria Anderson. Smith responded with a 3-pt play to push Mt. San Jacinto's lead back to 4 points, however, and then a free throw from Villalobos with 2:19 left made it 49-44. A pair of free throws by PG Brandi McCann with 1:49 left made it 51-44.
Chaffey made one last rally to cut the margin to 4 points at 52-48 with 21.6 seconds left, but didn't score again. Two more free throws by McCann with 4 seconds left sealed the win for Mt. San Jacinto.
The win by Mt. San Jacinto leaves both teams with overall records of 15-5 and conference marks of 2-1, one game behind conference leader Antelope Valley.
