Mt. San Jacinto 87, Chaffey 83

SG Melvin Goins scored 17 of his game-high 23 pts in the second half to lead #9 Mt. San Jacinto (14-7, 3-0) to an 87-83 win over host #2 Chaffey (18-3, 2-1), snapping the Panthers' 12-game win streak and vaulting the Eagles into first place in the Foothill Conference.

Goins scored 6 of his points during a key 8-0 Mt. San Jacinto run that turned a 79-75 deficit with just over 4 minutes left into an 83-79 lead. Then when he did miss a shot - after Chaffey scored the game's next 4 points to tie the game - PF Terrance Williams grabbed the rebound and scored on a putback, breaking an 83-83 tie with 25.5 seconds left.

This one was close all the way, with neither team leading by more than 8 points all afternoon. And neither team led by more than 5 points at any time in the second half.

The early part of the game featured several scoring spurts by both teams. Mt. San Jacinto started the game extremely well, jumping out to a 6-0 lead in the first minute and going ahead, 8-0, after a Goins jumper less than two minutes into the game. But Chaffey quickly rallied, tying the game on a basket by SG Anthony Cammon that made it 10-10 just 3:19 into the game.

Chaffey continued the momentum, taking a 15-12 lead after a lay-up by SF Winston Robinson on a sequence begun by a steal by Cammon. But then Mt. San Jacinto put together a 10-0 run to take a 22-15 lead after a basket by PG Mark Williams.

Then it was Chaffey's turn to grab the momentum, re-taking the lead when another Cammon basket gave the Panthers a 29-28 lead. Mt. San Jacinto went back in front, 32-31, on a basket by Mark Williams, but then Chaffey went on a 9-0 spurt to take a 40-32 lead, its biggest of the game, with 5:47 left in the first half.

That lead shrunk to just 2 points at 44-42 by halftime, which last nearly half an hour due to slippery conditions on the floor. When play finally resumed, Mt. San Jacinto went back in front early in the second half on a 3-pointer by Goins (though it was a little confusing due to the scoreboard being 3 points off for several minutes at that point).

Mt. San Jacinto led, 50-48, after a 3-pointer by PF Jeffrey West, but then Chaffey went on a 7-0 spurt to go back in front. Cammon scored all 7 points during that run, which ended with the Panthers ahead, 55-50.

That lead, however, would be short-lived. Mt. San Jacinto rallied to take a 57-56 lead after a pair of free throws by Mark Williams. After that, the lead went back and forth for the next several minutes, with neither team able to build more than a 2-point lead.

Chaffey finally pulled out to a 4-point lead after a pair of free throws by PF Anthony Soares with 4:49 left after he was fouled going for a rebound on a play that was initially ruled an offensive interference call.

Moments later, however, Goins lead Mt. San Jacinto back, hitting a short jumper with just under 3 minutes left to tie the game at 79. SF Curtis Bush scored on a putback of a Mark Williams miss, eerily foreshadowing what would eventually be the game-winning basket for Mt. San Jacinto, to give the Eagles an 81-79 lead. And Goins hit a fallaway jumper moments later to give the Eagles an 83-79 lead.

But Chaffey rallied from that deficit, with PF Nickalas Turner scoring after a pass from Soares after SG Andre Perkins had poked the ball away for a steal. And SF Lamar Williams tied the game with 43 seconds left following a frenzied sequence in which Williams stole the ball from Mark Williams only to have it stolen back, and then stole it back a second time, at which he was fouled by Williams.

That left the score tied at 83. Mt. San Jacinto got the ball to Goins, who missed a jumper from just beyond the free throw line. But T. Williams was there to snare the offensive rebound and put the ball through to give Mt. San Jacinto an 85-83 lead with 25.5 seconds left.

Chaffey still had time to rally, and got the ball to L. Williams. But his shot missed, and there was a held ball as both teams scrambled for the rebound. The possession arrow favored Mt. San Jacinto, so the Eagles were awarded possession with 6.7 seconds left. On the restart, Mark Williams was fouled by Chaffey's Lamar Williams (who fouled out on the play) with 4.2 seconds left. Chaffey called a timeout to try to ice him, but that ploy failed when Mark Williams calmly drained both free throws to make it 87-83 and clinch the win for the Eagles.

Goins finished 10 of 19 from the floor for his game-high 23 pts, and added 3 asts and 3 steals in a most impressive performance. M. Williams had 16 pts and a game-high 6 asts, and T. Williams went 6-for-6 from the floor for 14 pts and 5 rebs. West chipped in with 10 pts while Bush added 8 pts and a game-high 12 rebs.

For Chaffey, Cammon led the way with 22 pts (on 8-for-11 from the floor). Robinson had 16 pts and a team-high 9 rebs. Turner added 12 pts and 8 boards, and L. Williams had 10 pts and 4 asts. But Chaffey shot just 32% in the second half, compared to 51.5% for Mt. San Jacinto.

The win moves Mt. San Jacinto to the top of the Foothill Conference standings with a 3-0 conference record. The loss ends Chaffey's 12-game win streak that dated back to the Neil Edwards Tournament in November.
