Hope Smith scored 16 points and Shawn Kolani had 15 points and 7 assists to lead #7 Canyons to a 14-point win over shorthanded #13 Citrus in WSC-South womens' basketball Saturday at College of the Canyons.
Canyons (11-7, 1-1) broke open a close game with a 24-3 run in the first half to take a 32-11 lead, and led easily the rest of the way. Citrus (11-7, 0-2) trailed by 18 points at halftime and got within 13 points in the second half, but never got any closer.
It was 9-9 when the 24-3 run began. Keiona Mathews pushed Canyons' lead to double digits with a driving lay-up that made it 21-11 with just over nine minutes left in the first half. PF Delisa Chapman scored off a pass from Kolani after a steal to push Canyons' lead to 21 points at 33-12 with just under four minutes left in the first half.
Citrus got within 13 points in the second half when Nicole Zugasti scored to make it 44-31. But then Canyons stretched its lead back beyond 20 points, with a Kolani 3-pointer making it 60-38 with just under seven minutes remaining.
Smith finished with her team-high 16 pts and added 7 rebs and 3 steals. Kolani, younger sister of former Laker Jordan Farmar, had her 15 points on 5-for-8 from the floor, including 3 threes, and added 7 asts and 3 steals. Mathews came off the bench for 11 pts, 9 rebs, 5 asts and 3 steals for Canyons.
For Citrus, Zugasti had a game-high 24 pts and a team-high 9 rebs. But she was the only Citrus player to score in double digits. Ariana Caffey scored 9 points and Natalie Lam had 8 pts, 6 rebs, 5 asts and 3 steals. But Citrus was without leading scorer Ella Rodriguez and former Long Beach Poly standout Olivia Montgomery, the team's second-leading scorer on the season.
