SG Justin Taylor had 15 pts to lead a balanced attack for Moorpark as the Raiders (12-7, 2-1) topped LA Pierce (6-11, 0-2) in WSC-North action Wednesday evening.
Taylor made 3 threes in the game and led all scorers. PG Dwight Jones had 11 pts plus 3 asts and 5 steals, and Ctr Michael Rodgers had 11 pts, 4 rebs and 2 blocks for Moorpark. SG Braylin Bowman and SF Chris Booker each came off the bench to add 8 points for the Raiders, who were without leading scorer SF Matt Hornbuckle, who was out with a foot injury.
Pierce started the game well, jumping out to an 11-5 lead early on. But Moorpark rallied to tie the game at 20. The lead went back and forth for the next several minutes before Moorpark went on a 10-0 run to take a 36-26 lead late in the first half.
Moorpark led by 10 at 38-28 at halftime, and back-to-back threes by Taylor pushed the margin to 16 at 44-28 early in the second half.
Pierce quickly cut that lead to single digits, however, and got within 5 points at 46-41 when SF Justus Von Wright scored on a driving lay-up midway through the half.
But Moorpark pulled away again, building a double-digit lead at 57-47 after baskets by Taylor and Ctr Redmond Parker with just under 7 minutes left. A basket by Booker with just under 5 minutes left pushed the margin to 11 at 63-52, and Moorpark led by double digits the rest of the way. A lay-up by Booker moments later made it 65-53, and a short jumper by Braylin that made it 67-53 ended any doubt about the game's outcome.
Von Wright came off the bench to lead Pierce with 12 pts, and he also grabbed 6 rebs. In fact, all three double-digit scorers for Pierce came off the bench. PF Peter St. Hubert had 11 pts and a game-high 8 rebs, and PG Tyler Powell added 10 pts.
