Tara Casey and Morgan Bryant each came off the bench for 11 pts as #4 Irvine Valley easily outdistanced host Saddleback in OEC conference play Wednesday night in Mission Viejo.
Irvine Valley (15-3, 2-0) went on a 14-0 run early in the game, erasing a momentary 11-10 Gaucho lead and taking a double-digit advantage midway through the first half. Saddleback cut the deficit to eight points at 24-16, but a 3-pointer by Patricia Tidwell-McClure pushed Irvine Valley's lead back to 11 points and IVC led by 11 at the break, 31-20.
When the second half started, Irvine Valley gradually pulled away. Erika Mercado pushed the lead to 14 points with a jumper that made it 39-25. Casey scored on a fast break to make it a 16-point game, then passed to Conerie Brennan for a score that pushed the IVC lead to 18 at 45-27. A turnaround jumper by Bryant increased the lead to 20 at 48-28 with just under 9 minutes to play, ending any doubt as to the game's outcome.
Casey scored 11 pts and added 6 rebs, and Bryant had 11 pts on 4-for-5 from the floor while adding 4 rebs and 2 asts. Among the starters - who played light minutes due to the large IVC lead - Turner had 8 pts and 8 rebs and Jordan Coleman had 8 pts, 7 rebs and 5 asts.
For Saddleback, 2013-14 OEC Player of the Year Deja Brooks scored a game-high 14 pts and also grabbed 9 rebs, though she was just 6-for-21 from the floor and 2-for-10 from the free throw line. Shatiana Daniels had 7 pts and 8 rebs, and Danielle Munson had 9 rebs.
