Ctr Tyler Rose scored 17 pts to lead a balanced offensive attack as #12 Glendale (12-6, 2-1 in WSC-South) topped host LA Valley (7-13, 2-2) Saturday night in Valley Glen. Rose, a son of the well-known baseball legend, made 8 of 13 shots and also registered 3 blocks for the visiting Vaqueros, who overcame a hot-shooting start by the host Monarchs to get their second conference win.
Early on, Valley seemingly couldnt miss from the field. SF Aaron Johnson scored just a few seconds into the game, and PF Michael Martin made a three to give Valley a 5-0 lead in the first minute. Glendale answered back with a pair of threes by SG Jovan Jester, but Valley just kept on making shots. Martin made another three, and SG Dante Childress made one. Then PG Rai Colston joined in as well as backup PG Albert Ingram and Ctr Jayme Miller. By the midway point of the first half, Valley held a 28-16 lead, at which point they had made 11 of 15 shots including 6 threes. Plus, their box-and-one defense centered around Glendale standout Durwin Williams helped keep the Vaqueros in check at the other end. And things got a little scary when Williams tweaked his ankle.
But then Williams returned. And then Glendale rallied. And its no surprise that Williams led the way. First he scored on a FG+FT 3-point play. Then SF Mike Newton drained a three. And then Williams knocked down a jumper to make it 28-24. And perhaps more importantly, Valley stopped making shots. By the end of the first half, Valley led by just 4 at 38-34, and their shooting percentage had dropped below 50% (14-for-31).
When the second half began, Martin made another three to put Valley up by 7 at 41-34. But from then on, Glendale took control. Jester made a three and Newton scored a FG+FT 3-point play to cut the Valley lead to 1 at 41-10. Then Rose scored a pair of baskets, and Jester made another three to give Glendale a 47-45 lead.
Valley fought back to reclaim the lead on a steal and basket by Ingram and a putback by PF Jordan Rush, but then Glendale re-took the lead for good. A three by PG Kalen Mahoney, 2 free throws by SF Antony Phillips and a basket by PG D.J. Wyatt put Glendale ahead, 56-50. Phillips got a nice feed from Jester, and Williams knocked down a pair of free throws to finish the 11-0 run and give Glendale a 10-point lead at 60-50.
Valley scored the next 6 points (baskets by Childress and Rush and 2 free throws by Miller) but couldnt get any closer. Glendale continued to lead into the final minutes and put the game away on baskets by Williams and Newton, and a free throw by Jester.
Four of the five Glendale starters scored in double figures: in addition to Rose, Williams had 14 while Jester and Newton each scored 13. Jester had a strong all-around game with 4 threes, 8 rebs (tying Williams for team-high) and 6 asts. Wyatt scored 9 pts, dished out 7 asts and grabbed 3 steals.
For Valley, Miller led the way with 19 pts and 12 rebs, both game-highs. Martin added 13 pts but no other Monarch reached double figures. Colston dished out 7 asts. But Valley shot just 27% (14-for-51) after their initial hot streak and made just 2 more 3-pointers. And Valley was outrebounded by Glendale 22-18 in the second half.
In the womens game, host LA Valley got a dominant performance from Ctr Natasha Thomas to top visiting Glendale, 71-55. Thomas, a 6-3 freshman, scored 37 points on 16 of 21 shooting, and grabbed 18 rebounds, scoring 23 points in the second half as the Monarchs overcame an 8-point deficit at intermission.
Glendale took the lead in the opening minutes and pushed their advantage to 20-8 on the strength of 12 points from Ctr Jerniece Johnson. Valley rallied to trail by just 2 at 24-22 before Glendale pulled away again on a three by SG Julie An and a basket by PF Thea Bell to take a 34-26 halftime lead.
The second half, however, belonged to Thomas and the Monarchs. Thomas gave Valley a 44-43 lead with 11:40 left, and knocked down a three to give Valley a 6-point lead at 51-45. And by the time she scored on a putback basket to make it 57-45, Valley was in control for good.
PG Roxanna Quintero was Valleys other double-digit scorer; she finished with 10 points and 6 assists. SF Jennae Peoples had a strong game with 6 points and 5 rebounds. Peoples played virtually the entire second half after sitting out the entire first half.
J. Johnson led Glendale with 21 points. PF Deniece Johnson added 9 points and tied her sister for game honors with 8 rebounds. SF Lisa Yamasaki dished out a team-best 5 assists.
