Upset! #15 Foothill 98, #10 Chabot 80
SG Sam Obando scored 31 pts, including 5 threes, to lead a hot-shooting #15 Foothill (10-7, 1-0) team to an impressive win over host #10 Chabot (13-5, 0-1) in the Coast Conference - North opener for both teams.
The Owls shot 53% for the night, including 10 threes, and led the entire second half. An 11-0 run that broke a 34-all tie put Foothill ahead just before halftime. A pair of buckets by Obando, followed by a putback basket from PF Travis Harris, got the Owls started. At the half, Foothill led, 51-43.
Chabot rallied to within 5 at 63-58 early in the second half, but that was as close as they home squad would get. Ctr Ben Dondero scored 3 baskets and a free throw to put Foothill ahead by 14 at 73-59, and the Owls cruised the rest of the way.
At the game's start, Chabot jumped to an early 8-3 lead on threes by PG Ray Chavis and Ctr Isaiah Buckley and a bucket from SG Jamar Tatum. But then Foothill's Obando hit the last 3 of his 4 straight threes to start the game to give Foothill a 12-8 lead. SF Kevin Ummel added another to make it 15-8. Though Chabot rallied to tie the game at 17, Foothill's continued hot shooting soon put them in front again.
In addition to Obando, Foothill standouts included PG Josh Urbistanzo, who had 18 pts, 9 asts and 3 steals. Ummel had 12 pts, all on threes, and Dondero made all 6 of his shots from the floor to finish with 13 pts and 6 rebs. PF Erion Moore came off the bench to have a huge effort with 12 pts, 3 blocks and a game-high 9 rebs.
Buckley led Chabot with 17 pts, and he also had 5 rebs. Both Tatum twins started and had strong games: SG Jamar had 13 pts while SF Jerome had 12 pts, 6 rebs and 4 asts. Chavis added 11 pts and 6 asts. PF Larry Coley came off the bench to add 12 pts and 6 boards, and backup PG Chris Domin contributed 9 pts and 4 asts.
