All 13 players scored at least one field goal and the defense forced 32 turnovers as #7 Chaffey routed visiting Barstow Saturday afternoon for the CHP's fifth blowout win in five tries in its home gym so far this season.
Dubbed the CHP - or "Chaffey Hustlin' Panthers" - by coach Jeff Klein, Chaffey (15-5, 4-1) used its pressure to generate 21 steals and wear down Barstow (4-13, 2-3), pulling away in the second half after leading by only a basket at the break.
Barstow started out hot, making its first 8 shots of the game. SG Evan Jenkins hit back-to-back 3-pointers to start the game, and PF Jeremiah Wilson scored on a lay-up to make it 10-3. And the Vikings pushed the lead to 16-7 after back-to-back lay-ups by PG Shey Mataele.
But then Chaffey settled down, cutting the deficit to two points at 20-18 on a 3-pointer by SG Kenny Morgan with 8:11 left in the first half. Barstow pushed its lead back to nine points at 26-17 after a 3-pointer by SG Nate Lopez with just over six minutes left in the half.
But after that, Chaffey largely dominated the rest of the game. The Panthers went on a 13-0 run, tying the game at 27 when Morgan banked in a 3-pointer with 3:48 left and taking a 31-27 lead after a driving lay-up by Morgan and a basket by Ctr Adom Jacko off a pass from SF Carl Robinson with 2:40 left in the half.
Barstow pulled even one last time when Ctr Emani Gant scored off a pass from SF Richard Stamps, was fouled and made the resulting free throw to tie the score at 31 with 1:30 left in the first half.
But Chaffey got a twisting, spinning lay-up from PG Sango Niang in the closing seconds of the first half to take a 33-31 lead at the break. And to start the second half, SF Todd Lewis Jr. scored on a putback after not one but two missed dunk attempts - one by Morgan, one by Lewis - to make it 35-31. A basket by Jacko off a pass from PF Ryan Nitz and a score by Lewis from the lane made it 39-31.
Barstow cut the deficit to three points at 44-41 after a 3-pointer by Mataele, but then Chaffey began to pull away. A 3-pointer by SG Roderick Evans-Taylor pushed Chaffey's lead to double digits at 51-41, and Jacko scored on a putback to make it 53-41 with 12:54 left in the game.
Barstow cut the deficit to single digits on another Lopez 3-pointer that made it 53-44, and trailed by nine points one last time at 55-46. But SG Justin Long scored on a runner to push Chaffey's lead to 13 points at 59-46. Then Long hit a long 3-pointer with 9:53 left that made it 62-46, and Chaffey led easily the rest of the game.
Morgan led all scorers with 16 pts for Chaffey, and Long came off the bench for 15 pts. Niang had 14 pts. Jacko and Evans-Taylor each scored 7 pts. Robinson had a big impact with 4 pts, 4 asts, 2 rebs, 3 blocks and 4 steals. PG Justin Cole had perhaps the most unique statistical line, finishing with 4 pts, 4 rebs, 4 asts and 4 steals.
For Barstow, Lopez led the Vikings with 12 pts, including 3 threes, coming off the bench. Gant had a double-double with 10 pts, 10 rebs and 4 asts. Wilson also scored 10 pts. Mataele had 9 pts and 6 asts and Jenkins had 9 pts and 5 asts, but Mataele also had 10 turnovers and Jenkins had 9.
The win is Chaffey's 5th in 5 home games so far this season, and in those wins over Cypress, Rio Hondo, San Bernardino Valley, Desert and now Barstow, the CHP's margin of victory is over 32 points.
