Ashley Wakefield had 23 pts and 17 rebs as #10 Canyons (14-4, 4-0) overcame a sluggish start and used a 20-2 run in the second half to get past Santa Monica (9-11, 2-2), 59-49, Wednesday night in Santa Clarita.
Santa Monica opened a 16-7 lead after a 3-pointer by Haley Newell and led the entire first half, though Canyons closed the gap to three points at 22-19 late in the half and trailed by just five at halftime, 26-21. But SMC scored the first two baskets of the second half to restore the 9-point lead at 30-21.
A pair of 3-point plays by PG Dominique Turner sparked the Canyons run, making it a one-point game at 32-31. A pair of free throws by Joslynn Frazier put COC ahead, 33-32, with 14:16 left, and Canyons led the rest of the game.
The run continued though, with COC opening a 9-point lead after a jumper by Turner made it 41-32. Santa Monica closed to within four points at 43-39 and trailed by five points at 52-47 in the games final minute, but never quite made up the deficit. A basket by Wakefield and a pair of free throws by Turner in the final 30 seconds clinched the win for Canyons.
Turner finished with 15 pts and a game-high 5 asts off the bench for Canyons, which shot 50% from the floor in the decisive second half. Frazier had 6 pts but grabbed 12 rebs and blocked 3 shots.
Chantel Diaz led Santa Monica with 21 pts and 13 rebs. But nobody else on Santa Monica scored in double figures. Ema Alvarez had 7 pts and 4 asts, and Newell had 7 pts and 4 rebs.
