The Dominguez brothers, Parker and Rendon, combined for 37 points and PG Brian Kimble dished out 13 assists as Canyons defeated Santa Monica, 78-62, Wednesday night in a key WSC-South match-up in Santa Clarita.
Canyons (11-9, 2-2) led wire to wire, jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the games opening minutes and never surrendering that lead. A 3-pointer by SF Rendon Dominguez made it 7-2, with Brian Kimble drawing assists on all three baskets in the early going.
As the half continued, Canyons continued to extend its lead. A jumper by PF Brannon Bradley made it 12-4, and a putback basket by Ctr Hakeem Bradley made it 28-19. Then PF Parker Dominguez first passed to Hakeem Bradley for a basket, and then converted a pass from Brian Kimble for another score to make it 32-19 just over 13 minutes into the game.
And the Cougars kept stretching the lead, pushing the margin to 15 on a short jumper by Hakeem Bradley that made it 36-21 and to 17 on a steal & lay-up by SG Rasheem Harris. A 3-point play by Parker Dominguez made it 41-23, and Canyons held an 18-point lead at halftime, leading 45-27 after a basket by Ctr William Sams on which Brian Kimble drew his 10th assist of the night.
In the second half, Canyons started committing fouls, putting Santa Monica into the double bonus with 12:08 remaining. And the Corsairs (9-10, 1-3) took immediate advantage, with Ctr Bryant Crowder and SF Rodney Hudson each making a pair of free throws to make it 59-45.
But the closest Santa Monica would get was 10 points at 64-54 after a basket by PG Charlie Oriel after a steal by SF Kris Mehdipour. SMC trailed again by 10 at 67-57 with 5:47 left, but then Brian Kimble scored on a lay-up after a pass from Parker Dominguez, and Parker Dominguez scored after a pass from SG Ben Kimble to push COCs lead back to 15 at 73-58, and Santa Monica never threatened again.
For the Cougars, Parker Dominguez finished with 19 pts, 8 rebs and 5 asts. Rendon had 18 pts, including a pair of threes. Hakeem Bradley had 12 pts and 7 rebs, and Ben Kimble had 8 pts. Brian Kimble had 7 pts and the game-high 13 asts, more than the entire Santa Monica team.
Crowder led all scorers with 28 pts and also had game-highs of 13 rebs and 4 blocked shots. And Hudson had 14 pts plus 4 steals. But nobody else on Santa Monica had more than 6 points and combined to shoot just 17% from the floor (5-for-30).
The win gets Canyons, which shot a sizzling 62% from the floor in that big first half, even at 2-2 in conference play and back into the playoff race in the tough WSC-South. Santa Monica loses for the 7th time in 8 games and falls to 1-3 in WSC-South play.
