PF Durell Davis came off the bench to post totals of 19 pts, 8 rebs and 6 asts, and SF Carlton Spencer scored 20 pts as host College of the Canyons (13-4, 4-0) held off a late charge from Glendale (11-9, 3-2) Wednesday night.
On a night when COC's star Center Andrew Bruckner battled foul trouble and had just 4 pts, Durell Davis came up big for the Cougars. Glendale had jumped out to a 20-8 lead when Bruckner picked up his second foul, and D. Davis entered the game. Moments later, Glendale PF Mark Felder hit a short jumper to extend the Vaqueros' lead to 14 at 22-8, but by the end of the first half, Durell had 10 pts, 4 rebs, 4 asts and 2 steals, and COC had rallied to take a 32-29 halftime lead.
Felder hit a pair of FTs, and SF Mike Newton hit a short runner to give Glendale a 33-32 lead early in the second half, and that lead went to 39-36 moments later. But then COC's Spencer drained a 3-pointer, and was fouled, and also made the free throw to put the Cougars ahead, 40-39. Then Durell Davis scored 7 pts and Fwd Cedric Davis added 2 more as the Davises finished the 13-0 run to give COC a 10-point lead at 49-39. The Cougars still held what looked like a comfortable lead of 11 pts when Spencer hit another three to make it 62-51 with about 3 minutes left.
Then came the Glendale surge. Felder started it with a pair of FTs, and then PG Jason Flowers converted a 3-point play on a layup + FT to make it 62-56 with 2:02 left. Each team missed a pair of chances to score before Ctr Durwin Williams brought Glendale closer on a layup, and then stole the inbounds pass and scored again to make it 62-60 with 32 secs left.
Glendale was now forced to foul, but Spencer made a pair of FTs to make it 64-60. However, Glendale's Flowers converted another FG+FT 3-point play with 24 seconds left to make it a 1-point game at 64-63. And even though PG Curtis Dunwoody made a pair of FTs for COC moments later, Glendale still had 22 seconds and trailed by just 3 points.
But Newton's 3-pointer bounced off the rim. Felder grabbed the rebound, but his putback attempt was blocked by Bruckner and went to Durell Davis. By the time Glendale was able to foul, SG Alex Dunwoody had the ball and just 6 seconds remained on the clock. When A.Dunwoody made one free throw, it clinced the win for the Cougars.
Glendale was led by Felder, who scored a game-high 22 pts. Williams posted a double-double with 12 pts and 11 rebs, and also grabbed 6 steals. Flowers had 12 pts, 4 asts and 5 steals. But the Glendale bench was all but absent with a combined line of 0/5 fgs, 4 rebs, 1 ast, 1 blk, 4 turnovers and no points.
In the womens' game, #6 Canyons (15-4) won easily, 106-69, over Glendale (7-11). SG Erica Doyle led the way with 24 pts and 13 asts, while Ctr Jessi Loring had 21 pts, 13 rebs and 6 blocks. Glendale was led by SF Jerniece Johnson, who had 26 pts and 7 rebs. Glendale kept it close early and trailed by just 3 at 21-18 before COC went on a 25-6 run to take command.
