East LA 87, Pasadena 71

Ctr Brandon Chavers had a tremendous game with 26 pts, including 6 threes, plus 20 rebs and 6 asts as East LA (7-12, 2-0) led wire to wire in an 87-71 win over host Pasadena (6-13, 1-2) Friday night in SCC-North play.

Chavers hit a pair of threes to help stake East LA to an early 8-0 lead, and the Huskies never surrendered the lead. He fed PF Lester Keys for a lay-up to push the margin to 10 at 24-14 midway through the half. The East LA lead reached 13 at 30-17 after a driving lay-up by SG Andrew Ruiz with just over 8 minutes left in the first half.

Pasadena cut the margin to six points at 38-32 with 1:20 left in the half, and trailed by seven at 40-33 at the break.

But East LA pushed the margin out to 17 points at 60-43 early in the second half behind a pair of baskets by Ctr Sergio Lugo and a reverse lay-up by Ruiz.

Pasadena made a pair of late runs at the Huskies, but each time East LA answered back strongly.

The Lancers got within seven points at 60-53 with 11:57 left after a 3-pointer by SG Jordan Block and a lay-up by SG Shawn Hampton. But East LA answered with a bank-shot by SF Jeremy Gerardo and a basket by Chavers to make it 64-53. Then a driving lay-up by Keys and three free throws by Ruiz (in four tries over two consecutive trips down the court) made it 69-53 with 9:05 left.

Pasadena's other run saw Block score on a putback, then steal the ball in the East LA backcourt and score, draw the foul and convert the free throw to make it 72-63 with 5:55 left. But Chavers answered that run with a pair of threes sandwiched around a three by Keys on which Chavers assisted, pushing East LA's lead to 18 points at 81-63. One final Chavers 3-pointer pushed the lead to 20 points at 85-65, if there was any remaining doubt as to the game's outcome.

It might have been a career night - so far, anyway - for Chavers, but he's had quite a run over the last month. He's scored in double figures in seven straight games and pulled down double-digit rebounds in six of his last eight, and he beat SCC-South favorite Cerritos on a half-court 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Also for East LA, Keys had 16 pts and Gerardo had 15. Lugo came off the bench for 11 pts and 7 rebs.

For Pasadena, Block led all scorers with 28 pts, and he also had 6 rebs and 5 steals. Hampton had 12 pts and Ctr Marcus Harvey had a double-double with 11 pts and 12 rebs. PF Elliott Berry had 10 pts on 3-for-14 and grabbed 8 rebs.
