SF Thomas Scott scored 23 pts and SG Terrell Stovall added 19 as #6 Pasadena (17-5, 3-0) overcame a horrific start to beat visiting #10 Compton (8-5, 1-2), 71-60.
But at the game's beginning, it looked like Pasadena was in trouble. Compton jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first 2 minutes as Pasadena committed 3 turnovers, an intentional foul and a technical foul. And the margin continued to grow as Compton SG Leon Jacobs registered a pair of steals in the Lancer backcourt, the first of which led to a Jacobs jam, and the second of which led to a layup by SF Kevin Lewis. A short layup by Darren Brown, his third inside basket of the game, made it 16-2 Compton.
Finally, Pasadena settled down and dug themselves out of the early hole. Stovall and Scott each nailed threes, and Ctr Mark Dawson got a dunk to get PCC back into the game, trailing just 16-10. And the run continued, with Pasadena taking the lead on a three from Stovall with 8:13 left in the half. Another dunk by Dawson made it 24-20. The lead was still 4 until the final minute when SF Deon Marcus and Scott each scored baskets to give the Lancers a 38-30 lead at intermission.
Pasadena maintained their lead the rest of the way, though Compton closed the gap to 59-58 on a layup from PF Willie Dunn with about 4 minutes left. But PF Israel Miller scored a putback basket, Stovall hit a jumper and Scott nailed a three to restore Pasadena's 8-point lead at 66-58. Following a layup by Compton's PF Gaston Essengue to cut the deficit to 6 at 66-60, Pasadena pulled away again on a dunk by Dawson on an alley-oop pass from PG Corey McIntosh, followed by a short runner by Scott. That made it 70-60 with 20.1 seconds left, securing the win for the Lancers.
In addition to Scott and Stovall, Pasadena got strong performances from PGs McIntosh and Garrett Pickens, who split time at the point and combined for 13 assists. Dawson finished with 7 pts and a team-best 7 rebs despite battling foul trouble. And backup Ctr Simon Coetzee came on to block 4 shots and play solid defense against Compton's front line.
Compton was led by Brown, who had 12 pts and 6 rebs. Dunn shot just 1 for 9 from the floor, but had a strong all-around game with a team-high 5 asts and a game-high 8 rebs. PG Gary Looney had 11 pts, while Essengue added 9 pts in a reserve role.
In the womens' game, the undefeated second-ranked Lady Lancers (19-0) topped #10 Compton (12-8), 64-49. SF Dionne Pounds led the way with 19 pts and 9 rebs, while PF Monique Diaz added 14 pts and 6 asts. PCC led by just a point at the half despite shooting just 21% from the floor, aided by Compton's 16 first-half turnovers. But Pasadena shot 55% in the second half and pulled away. A key factor was that Compton's PF Trashon Perkins picked up her 4th foul with 17:02 left; the score at the time was PCC 25, Compton 24. Just 40 seconds later, a three by Pounds and a layup by Diaz started the Lady Lancers on a run, and their lead reached double digits to stay with 12:30 left.
SG Anette Johansen had 12 pts and 5 rebs for PCC, and PF Christina Miner came off the bench to grab 11 rebs. SF Tommie Thompson led Compton with 15 pts and added 7 rebs. Perkins had 11 pts and 8 boards despite missing most of the second half with foul trouble. PG Precious Sheats had a strong game with 10 pts and 6 asts. Ctr Tiniesha Brooks had 6 pts and 11 rebs.
