Ventura 63, Oxnard 16 (women)

Donielle Griggs had 14 pts and Erika Ward had 11 pts and 5 asts as #1-ranked and still-unbeaten Ventura (24-0, 5-0) threatened the team record for fewest points allowed in a 63-16 win over WSC-North rival Oxnard (7-14, 2-3) Saturday night in Ventura.

Ventura handed out media guides at the entrance before the game, and they came in handy to check the team record for fewest points allowed in a game. That mark of 13, set in 2000 against LA Pierce, remains the standard after Oxnard's Tonee Martin scored 5 points in the final three minutes to keep her team out of the Ventura record book.

The game was never in doubt, as Ventura jumped out to a 19-0 lead and was never challenged. The Ventura defense held Oxnard scoreless on 0-for-10 from the floor with 10 turnovers until Charnisha Bradley made a free throw with 8:43 left in the first half. Chloe Bunker made Oxnard's first field goal with 3:10 left in the half. Ventura led, 31-6, at halftime, just missing the team record for fewest points allowed in a half (4 - set twice in other seasons vs. Oxnard).

After Bunker's putback basket, Amanda Izaguirre made a 3-pointer to cut the Ventura lead to 19 at 25-6. But then Griggs drained a three to push the lead back above 20, and it stayed there the rest of the way. The Ventura defense began the second half as it did the first, holding Oxnard scoreless for the first 7:58 in pushing the lead to 47-6 before Bradley again broke the drought, this time with a pair of free throws.

The win improves Ventura's record to 24-0 overall and 5-0 in the WSC-North while Oxnard falls to 7-14 overall and 2-3 in the division.
