LA Valley 70, West LA 55

PG Gino Riney had 20 pts and 6 asts, and Ctr Shaun Johnson added 19 pts, 9 rebs and 5 blocked shots as #14 LA Valley (14-8, 3-3) topped #13 West LA (15-8, 3-3), 70-55, Saturday night in Valley Glen.

Valley led wire-to-wire, scoring three baskets in the first ninety seconds to take a quick 6-0 lead. West LA cut the margin to 3 points at 13-10 before Valley increased the margin to 10 points at 21-11 on a putback basket by SF Germel Coleman. Then the Monarchs pulled away, thanks largely to Riney. After West LA cut the Valley lead to 9 points at 22-13, the sophomore point guard scored on a driving lay-up to make it 24-13. After another West LA basket, Riney drained a three to make it 27-15. Then came another three, and then another to push the Monarch advantage to 16 at 33-17.

Riney made a pair of free throws just before halftime to give Valley a 46-32 lead at the break. At that point, Riney had 20 points and 5 assists.

When the second half began, West LA went to a press, largely to get the ball out of Riney’s hands. That strategy worked, as the Oilers limited Valley to just 6 points in the first 9 minutes of the second half and gradually chipped away at the lead. When Ctr Josh Jordan scored from near the basket with just under 11 minutes to go, that brought West LA to within 6 points at 52-46.

That would be as close as West would get, though they still trailed by just 7 at 62-55 with just under 5 minutes remaining after a running jumper by SF Tim Jackson.

That, however, would be West’s last points of the game. PG Bo Bennett scored for Valley with just over 4 minutes left on a baseline drive to make it 64-55. Then Coleman stole the ball and went in for the score to make it 66-55. A pair of free throws by Coleman with 2:41 left made it 68-55, and a putback basket by Johnson with 1:15 left closed out the scoring, making it 70-55.

Riney led all scorers with 20 points, and also dished out a game-high 6 assists. Johnson, who posted a triple-double Wednesday in Valley’s win over Canyons, just missed a double-double with 19 points plus game-highs of 9 rebounds, 5 blocked shots and 3 steals. Coleman also had a solid game with 16 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.

For West LA, Jackson led the way with 17 points, and also had 7 rebounds. PG Justin Archie had 13 pts, 6 rebs and 3 asts, and PF Jerard Moret had 11 pts, 7 rebs and a team-high 5 asts. Jordan pulled down a team-high 8 rebs.
