PF Anthony Johnson had 17 pts and PG Jamelle Barrett had a double-double as #7 Cosumnes River (15-5, 5-2) snapped a 2-game losing streak with a 77-61 win over Sierra (7-12, 0-7) Tuesday night in Big 8 Conference action.
After a tough week that included losses at Diablo Valley and to San Joaquin Delta, Cosumnes River had little trouble with Sierra, taking a lead midway through the first half and cruising to the win.
Barrett displayed his talents as CRC jumped out to an early 11-4 lead, assisting on four Hawks' baskets and scoring the other himself on a short jumper. After a 3-pointer by Sierra's SG Roop Kahlon, Barrett 3-pointer made it 14-7.
Rahlon stayed hot, however, shooting Sierra back into the game and into the lead, sparking a 13-1 run with another 3-pointer. Then a driving lay-up by PG Darell Gordon and a tip-in by Ctr Casey Arent tied the score at 14. After a free throw by Barrett, Kahlon hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give Sierra a 20-15 lead.
But that Barrett free throw would be pivotal in the game, as it came when the sophomore point guard drove through the paint and collided with Arent, Sierra's talented 6-10 center. Arent was charged with the foul on the play, but he also injured his ankle; he missed the rest of the half and was slowed noticeably the rest of the game.
And soon enough, Cosumnes River went on a 17-1 run and back into the lead. A 3-pointer by SG Cory Zackery put CRC ahead, 22-20. A pair of free throws by Johnson made it 24-20 and a putback basket by SF Gabe Strong made it 26-21. A pair of free throws by Zackery and baskets by PF Shelby Parson and Johnson made it 32-21 with 2:35 left in the half.
A basket by SF Vaughn Irish (after an assist by Barrett) in the closing seconds of the half made it 39-25 at the break. Barrett finished the half with 6 assists, but could easily have had at least four more if not for some missed lay-ups.
When the second half started, Sierra rallied to within 7 points at 46-39 after a 3-pointer by SF Colin Johnson with just over 13 minutes left in the game.
But then Cosumnes River went on a 19-2 run to put the game away. A putback basket by Parson and a driving lay-up by Strong made it 50-39, and another putback basket by Parson made it 52-39. A flying dunk by Strong after a steal by Parson made it 54-39 and ended any real doubt as to the game's outcome. Barrett scored on a driving lay-up to push the lead to 75-55 later in the half.
For CRC, Johnson had a game-high 17 pts, and also grabbed 8 rebs. Barrett had 15 pts, including a couple of threes, plus a game-high 10 asts and 2 steals. Strong also had 15 pts, making 7 of 9 shots from the floor, and grabbed 8 boards. Zackery had 9 pts plus 3 asts and 3 steals, and Parson came off the bench for 8 pts and 7 rebs.
For Sierra, Gordon led the way with 13 pts and 5 asts. Kahlon had 12 pts, all on those early threes, and Colin Johnson had 11 pts and 6 rebs. PF Chris Ayo had 7 pts and 7 rebs, and PF Ryan Pearson came off the bench for 9 pts and 8 rebs. But Arent, slowed noticeably by the ankle injury, managed just 6 pts and one rebound, and had 4 turnovers, 3 on traveling calls in the lane.
