Ventura 108, Moorpark 85 (women: VC, 77-46)

SF Elijah Muldrow was one of six Ventura scorers in double figures as the Pirates (16-5, 6-0) shot an unreal 72% from the floor in their 108-85 win over visiting Moorpark (8-11, 3-3) January 28th.

Muldrow finished with 20 pts (3 threes) plus 9 rebs and 8 asts to lead the way, but there were many standouts for Ventura in this one. PF Moses Gonzalez had 19 pts and a game-high 12 rebs, and Ctr Gary Nunez added 15 pts and 6 rebs. PG Hylas Smith scored 16 pts (6/7 FGs, 4 threes) and dished out 7 asts before leaving the game midway through the second half with an ankle injury. Ctr Danny Gray (11 pts) and PG Thomas Battle (10 pts, 3 asts) were the other scorers with at least 10 pts. All 9 Ventura players made more than half their shots from the floor, as the Pirates finished 46 of 64 including 27 of 35 (77%) in the second half.

Early on, Moorpark's pressure allowed them to stay in the game as Ventura piled up the turnovers. Muldrow put Ventura ahead 3-0 in the opening seconds, but after that it was still even 7-7, and Ventura led by just a point at 9-8 until a 10-0 run put them in control. A three by Muldrow and a putback by Gonzalez finished the run, making it 19-8. A three from Smith, while Moorpark (amidst some confusion) had only 4 players on the floor, extended their lead to 34-21 midway through the first half. At that point, Ventura had made 13 of 16 shots from the floor, but had committed 12 turnovers. Ventura extended the lead to 16 at 48-32 before a putback basket by Moorpark's Allen McMillen just before the halftime buzzer made it 48-34.

Early in the second half, Moorpark rallied to trail by just 10 at 50-40 on a putback basket and a three by SG Mike Gentry. A FG+FT three-point play by Nunez and a three by Smith helped spur a run that seemed to put Ventura in command at 64-44, at which point Ventura had once again made 13 of their first 16 shots of the half.

Then Moorpark rallied for the last time. A pair of threes by SG Todd Tomlinson were sandwiched around a basket by SF Marques Allen to bring the Raiders to within 8 at 76-68. But then Gray led Ventura on a run to pull away again, scoring 7 pts on a FG+FT 3-point play, a dunk and a layup. A Muldrow three was mixed in their as well, and that 10-0 run made it 86-68 with 7:09 left. Moorpark never threatened again.

Moorpark lost despite a marvelous game from PG Johnny Gray, who led all scorers with 27 pts and tied Muldrow for game honors with 8 asts. He also grabbed 5 steals, and had just 1 turnover. PF Earnest Williams added 19 pts and Gentry had 11. But Moorpark shot just 38% for the game, and was outrebounded 49-27.

In the womens' game, Ctr Kristine Gleisberg scored 20 pts and grabbed 11 rebs to lead Ventura (19-3) to a 77-46 win over Moorpark (14-8). SF Courtney Young added 16 pts and a game-high 6 asts in an easy win.

Moorpark started a big lineup, featuring 4 forwards and PG Sarah Ruiz, to counteract Ventura's size. But that strategy backfired as Ventura jumped out to a 10-1 lead in the first 4:16, capitalizing on 5 early Moorpark turnovers. Ventura later extended the lead to 14-1 and 31-11 and cruised the rest of the way.

Gleisberg also had 4 of Ventura's 9 blocks, and had 4 of Ventura's 21 steals. Moorpark shot just 29.5% from the floor. PF Taryn Milburn led Moorpark wtih 10 pts and 7 rebs.
