Glendale 95, West LA 88

Three players scored 21 points each for Glendale as the Vaqueros (10-14, 3-4) kept their playoff hopes alive with a 95-88 win over West LA (13-13, 3-4) in WSC-South play Saturday evening in Glendale.

SG Markus Monroe, the WSC-South's leading scorer, PF Peter Newell and SF Deonte Wyatt each had 21 pts for the Vaqueros, who went on a 19-2 run in the first half to take a lead they would hold the rest of the game.

West LA rallied in the second half to close the margin to just 4 points at 84-80 with 3:30 remaining, but never got any closer. A free throw and a 3-pointer by Monroe pushed Glendale's lead back to 8 at 88-80 with 2:25 left.

West LA again got the margin down to 4 points at 89-85 with 1:12 left but didn't score again until the final seconds. A basket by Wyatt, four free throws by Newell and a free throw by Ctr Josh Guillory had secured the win for Glendale by that time.

West LA took an early 10-4 lead after 3-pointers by SG Jason Pruitt and PF Chanderrick (Sean) Tyson. And the Wildcats still held a 20-16 lead midway through the half.

But then came the 19-2 Glendale run, enabling the Vaqueros to take a 13-point lead. The margin went to 15 after a 3-pointer by SF Michael Cotton made it 42-27 with 3:19 left in the half.

West LA cut the margin to 9 points at the half, and got within 5 points at 48-43 early in the second half. But the Wildcats never quite pulled even. Glendale pushed the margin back to 11 after a 3-pointer by Newell made it 59-48. And a basket by PG Shara Babakhanian made it a 14-point game at 74-60 with 9:40 remaining.

West LA would close the gap to 4 points with 3:30 left and still trail by just 4 with 1:12 left, but Glendale was able to hold on for the win.

For Glendale, Monroe not only scored 21 pts but also had 6 rebs and 4 asts. Wyatt had 7 rebs and 4 blocks in addition to his 21 pts, and Newell had 6 rebs, 4 asts and 4 steals in addition to his 21 pts. Cotton came off the bench to add 13 pts.

For West LA, Tyson led all scorers with 26 pts, and also added 11 rebs and 4 asts. Pruitt had 16 pts and Ctr Shakir Johnson just missed a triple-double with 15 pts, 12 rebs and 8 blocked shots. SF Robert Broderick came off the bench to score 11 pts, and SF Chris Williams had a double-double with 10 pts and 10 rebs.

The win improves Glendale's record to 10-14 overall but more importantly 3-4 in the WSC-South, tied with West LA for 4th place. The Wildcats, who defeated Glendale at home earlier in January, fall to 13-13 overall with the loss.
