#2-ranked Chaffey jumped out to a 23-8 lead in the game's first 8-plus minutes and cruised to a wire-to-wire victory over visiting Southwestern Saturday afternoon in a non-conference game in Rancho Cucamonga.
Chaffey (17-3) started quickly, taking a 9-0 lead after a 3-point play by Ctr Adom Jacko just 1:59 into the game, and never relinquished the lead. The margin was 16 points at the half, and the Panthers led by double digits throughout the second half.
Southwestern (5-8) closed the gap to four points at 12-8 after the initial Chaffey spurt, but then the CHP went on an 11-0 run to regain control of the game. SF Jeff Nibo started the run with a 3-point field goal, which was followed by another traditional 3-point play by Jacko. Then SG John Gilliam scored on a driving lay-up to make it 20-8, and hit a 3-point basket to make it 23-8 with just under 12 minutes left in the first half.
Chaffey led comfortably the rest of the way. PF Roderick Evans-Taylor scored inside to push Chaffey's lead to 18 points at 35-17 with about 7 minutes to go in the first half, and it was 45-29 at the break. A 3-pointer by SG Devyn Sampson pushed Chaffey's lead beyond 20 points at 59-38 with 10:40 left, and the Panthers cruised to the win.
Nibo led Chaffey with 18 pts, which included 3 three-pointers. Gilliam had a strong overall game with 14 pts, 5 rebs, 3 asts, 2 blocks and 2 steals. Jacko just missed a double-double with 13 pts and a game-high 9 rebs, and Evans-Taylor also had 13 pts. PG Julian Nichols had just 2 pts but dished out a game-high 10 asts.
For Southwestern, SF Shawn Lathan had a game-high 19 pts, which came on 7-for-10 from the floor, and grabbed 5 rebs. SF David Scarafone came off the bench for 11 pts, including 3 threes, and Ctr Jimmie Edler-Chapman had 10 pts. PF Blake Yocum had 6 pts and a team-best 6 rebs, and PG Devin Portis came off the bench for 8 pts and team-highs of 5 asts and 3 steals.
