Five players scored in double figures for #6 Antelope Valley, which started the second half with a 15-2 run to take control in an 88-52 rout of Desert Saturday afternoon in Lancaster.
In the Foothill Conference opener for both teams, it started out on fairly even terms as the teams combined to make 6 of their first 7 shots. The score was 8-8 at that point.
Then Antelope Valley (9-5, 1-0) started to pull away. The Marauders made 7 of their first 11 shots from the floor, with SG Lucciano Gamiz making three of those baskets, all from 3-point range. Then Gamiz made two free throws when a technical foul was assessed against Desert Ctr Shawnrontate Foster for trying to kick AVC Ctr Dwan Caldwell after a collision; those free throws made it 21-13 with 12:40 left in the first half.
AVC pushed its lead to double digits on a jumper by PG Michaelyn Scott from the top of the key that made it 26-15 with 11:30 left in the half, and Ctr Zachary Hollis made a left-handed hook shot moments later to push the Marauder lead to 13 points at 28-15.
Desert (4-10, 0-1) chipped into that lead, cutting the deficit to nine points when PG Andre Conley scored on a putback of his own miss to make it 28-19. Conley nailed a short jumper to make it an 8-point game at 29-21 with just under 8 minutes left. About a minute later Foster hit a 3-pointer to bring the Roadrunners within seven points at 31-24.
After that, Antelope Valley just took over the game. Caldwell scored on a nice give-and-go from Scott to push AVC's lead back to 13 points at 44-31. SF Daviyon Draper made two free throws with 1:10 left and added one more with 46.3 seconds left in the half to make it 47-31, which is where things stood at the break.
If there was any doubt as to which team was in control at that point, it quickly disappeared as soon as the second half started. Antelope Valley began the half with a 15-2 run to push its lead to 29 points about five minutes into the second half.
Caldwell scored off a pass from Draper in the first minute of the second half to push AVC's lead to 49-31. Then he converted a 3-point play after grabbing a rebound near the AVC basket and dribbling the length of the floor that made it 52-32 just 1:42 into the half.
Draper scored off a pass from Scott following a steal by PF Larry Slaughter to make it 54-32, and Caldwell knocked down a jumper to make it 56-32. Then Draper drained a 3-pointer to push the AVC lead to 26 at 59-33. PF John Washington made a baby hook shot to make it 61-33 with just over 15 minutes left in the game. Draper added a free throw to make it 62-33 and finish the run.
Draper finished with 14 pts, 7 rebs, 2 asts and a steal for AVC, tying for game honors with Gamiz, who also finished with 14 pts (4 threes). PF Vadal Faniel had 12 pts, 7 rebs, 4 asts, a block and a steal. Washington also had 12 pts, which came on 5-for-5 from the floor and 2-for-2 from the line. Caldwell had the game's only double-double with 10 pts and a game-high 10 rebs. Scott had just 5 pts but dished out a game-high 7 asts.
For Desert, SF Jarred Kinsey had 13 pts plus 4 rebs, 2 asts and a blocked shot, but was just 5-for-18 from the floor. Foster came off the bench for 11 pts. PF John Howard added 7 pts and grabbed a team-high 7 rebs. Conley had 6 pts and a team-best 4 asts.
