LA Valley 70, Glendale 58

SF Jerome Lowe had 16 pts and Ctr Pierre Prince had a double-double as LA Valley (10-7, 1-0) beat Glendale (7-8, 0-1) in the WSC-South opener for both teams Wednesday night in Valley Glen.

LA Valley led the entire second half after holding a 4-point edge at halftime. Glendale shot just 24% from the floor in the second half and scored just 19 points, making a comeback just about impossible.

Glendale began the game well enough, jumping out to a 10-4 lead in the opening minutes. Valley rallied to take a 15-14 lead on a 3-pointer by Lowe about seven minutes into the game, and the lead went back and forth for the next several minutes.

Valley opened a 7-point lead after a 3-point play by PF Andrey Orlov and a 3-point basket by SG Dagem Asfaw late in the first half. Glendale cut the margin to 2 late in the half after a pair of free throws by SG Demetrius Perkins - which made Glendale 14 for 14 from the line to that point - and a 3-pointer from SF Deonte Wyatt.

Valley got a putback basket by Ctr Amer Mudallal at the first half buzzer to make it 43-39. And then Lowe hit a 3-pointer and Prince made one of two free throws in the first minute of the second half to push the Monarchs' lead to 8 points at 47-39.

Glendale rallied one more time, cutting the deficit to two points at 47-45, but then Valley pulled away again, this time for good. A pair of free throws by PG Robert Brown made it a 9-point game at 56-47, and a 3-point play by Orlov with 12:22 left pushed the margin to 11 at 59-48. Glendale never got closer than 8 points again.

Lowe led all scorers with his 16 pts, and just missed a double-double with 9 rebs. Prince got the double-double with 12 pts and a game-high 14 rebs. Orlov came off the bench to chip in with 10 pts, and Brown had 8 pts plus a game-high 7 asts.

For Glendale, PF Narbeh Ebrahimian led the way with 15 pts plus 4 rebs and 4 asts. Wyatt had 11 pts before fouling out with 5:50 left, but was just 4-for-17 from the floor. Ctr Lucian Franklin came off the bench for 11 pts and 5 rebs.
