Chaffey 51, San Bernardino Valley 49 (women)

Alyssa Domingo scored with a one-handed lay-up with 7.2 seconds left to break a 49-all tie and lead #8 Chaffey to a two-point win over visiting #4 San Bernardino Valley for a share of the Foothill Conference lead Wednesday evening in Rancho Cucamonga.

In a game in which neither team led by more than eight points, Domingo's shot proved to be the difference for Chaffey (11-5, 2-0). San Bernardino Valley (13-4, 1-1) had one last chance to win but Neika Puryear's 3-point try bounced off the front rim and just to the left of the basket as the final horn sounded.

It was a defensive battle between two of the better women's teams in the state, and the largest lead for either team was Chaffey's 26-18 advantage in the opening seconds of the second half. SBVC's largest lead was at 13-6 midway through the first half, but Chaffey answered with a 9-2 run to tie the score at 15 with just under five minutes to go before the break.

Chaffey took a 19-18 lead on a 3-pointer by Ashlee Harper with 1:45 left in the first half. Two free throws by Brittany Richardson with 55.1 seconds left made it 21-18, and Harper hit another three in the final seconds of the half to make it 24-18 at intermission.

Bree Ball made two free throws 11 seconds into the second half to give Chaffey what would be the largest lead of the game for either team at 26-18. San Bernardino rallied to tie the score at 31 with 14:40 left on a lay-up by Summer Ramsey after she intercepted a pass for a steal.

After that, the lead went back and forth several times with Puryear tying the score at 49 on a reverse lay-up with 23.6 seconds left. Domingo answered with her game-winning shot just over 16 seconds later, and Puryear's last-second attempt to win it for SBVC was tantalizingly close but missed.

For Chaffey, Harper came off the bench for a huge performance with 22 pts, including 4 threes, plus 6 rebs and 4 blocked shots. She was the only player for Chaffey to score in double digits. Ball had 8 pts and 8 rebs, also off the bench, and Domingo also finished with 8 pts.

For San Bernardino Valley, Puryear had a team-high 13 pts and added 6 rebs and 5 asts. Latice Butler flirted with a triple double before finishing with 12 pts and game-highs of 13 rebs and 8 steals. Ramsey had 9 pts, 5 asts, 4 rebs and 3 steals.
