In a showdown of local rivals, #6 Chaffey broke open a close game with a 9-0 spurt that became a 25-8 run to pull away from visiting #13 San Bernardino Valley and maintain a share of first place in the Foothill League Wednesday night in Rancho Cucamonga.
Chaffey (13-4, 2-0) trailed by a point at halftime, and held a slim 44-43 lead early in the second half. Then a 3-pointer by SG Justin Long started a 9-0 run to push Chaffey's lead to 53-43. After San Bernardino Valley (10-6, 1-1) stopped the run with a 3-pointer by SF Cameron Lewis, PF D'on Hall answered with a 3-pointer and Chaffey quickly pushes its lead to 69-51 to take control of the game.
All that came after a first half in which Chaffey shot just 28% and fell behind despite holding a 28-19 rebounding advantage and committing just 5 turnovers. But in the second half, San Bernardino Valley made just 6 of 36 shot attempts (17%), with Lewis making all but one of the successful field goal attempts.
San Bernardino Valley jumped out to an early 8-3 lead after making its first three shot attempts of the game. But Chaffey got 3-pointers from Long and SG Justin Cole to take a 9-8 lead. A dunk by Cole and a 3-pointer by SG Kenny Morgan pushed Chaffey's lead to 14-8 just over six minutes into the game.
San Bernardino Valley rallied to tie the score at 14, and it was tied several more times before PF Marcus Bradley put the Wolverines ahead, 33-32, with under two minutes left in the first half. Ctr Adom Jacko answered with a putback basket for Chaffey with about 45 seconds left, but Bradley made two free throws with 16.6 seconds remaining to give SBVC a 35-34 halftime lead. And his putback moments later was ruled to be just after the halftime buzzer.
Chaffey wasted little time regaining the lead in the second half as Morgan was fouled attempting a 3-point shot 37 seconds into the half and made all three free throws. Lewis put SBVC back in front with a 3-point field goal, but Ctr Anthony Fitzpatrick scored on a putback to give the Panthers a 39-38 lead. After a Rondo-like ball fake, Morgan scored on a drive to make it 41-38.
Chaffey clung to a 44-43 lead when Long's 3-pointer started the 25-8 run. A lay-in by Hall - he missed a dunk attempt but managed to get the ball in the basket anyway - and two free throws by Long made it 51-43. An outlet pass by Fitzpatrick after he picked up a loose ball led to a lay-up by Morgan that made it 53-43.
Lewis' 3-pointer brought SBVC within single digits one last time, but Hall's 3-pointer for Chaffey made it 56-46. Long made two more free throws to make it 58-46 with 11:33 left. A minute later Long hit a 30-foot 3-pointer to make it 61-47. PG Sango Niang was fouled attempting a 3-pointer and made all three free throws with 9:26 left to push the lead to 16 points at 67-51. SF Todd Lewis Jr. made two free throws with 8:21 left to push the lead to 18 points at 69-51.
Niang provided a couple of highlights later with some Darren Collison-like ankle-breaking moves. One led to his making a jumper to push Chaffey's lead to 20 points at 76-56 with 4:46 left. The next led to a lay-up by Fitzpatrick that made it 78-56 with just over four minutes to go.
For Chaffey, Long came off the bench for a team-best 21 pts, including 4 three-pointers. Morgan had 14 pts, 4 rebs and 3 steals. Cole had 10 pts, 5 rebs, 3 asts and 4 steals. Ten different Panthers scored at least one basket and all 11 Chaffey players had at least one rebound, leading to a 54-47 rebounding advantage over the taller Wolverines.
For San Bernardino Valley, PG Gerry Blakes scored 21 pts, including 4 threes, and added 8 rebs and 7 asts. Lewis had 17 pts, including 5 threes, and 6 rebs. But no other Wolverine scored mroe than 7 points or made a field goal in the second half.
